Larry Niven's Ring World series, anything Orison Scott Card, Michael Stackpole's BattleTech universe books. Outside of Scifi/fantasy, Chuck Palahniuk's writing is just enthralling and William S. Burroughs is a writer like no one else- but his works require a open mind and a strong stomach.
