About Me

Writer and musician Keith Buckman has been playing with a number of rock and jazz projects since the late seventies. As bassist with the rock bands Grey Matter and Street Preacher, he worked with Peter Cox (Go West), Lez Warner (The Cult) and Mark Keen (The Grip) before deciding to focus on a career in higher education. He continued to compose and play bass and guitar in various contemporary jazz line ups during the eighties and nineties. In 2001, he contributed as a bass player on Phildas Bhakta's world record breaking (40:57:32) Ultimate Phil Collins Tribute drumathon. In 2003 he teamed up with former college friend Glenn Hayler to form 2busy and has since continued to work with him on various band projects, most recently as guitarist with the rock group Gas Tank.
Since 2004 he has been working on acoustic song settings in singer-songwriter collaborations with manuela , Angela Ramsay and RamsayGee . Keith and Angela released an album of their songs in 2008, A Suburban Condition, which also features songs Keith has co-written with RamsayGee and Glenn Hayler.
Keith's interest in using ambient and solo electric guitar voicings have also been put to good effect, most notably in collaboration with the electronica artist RamsayGee.
Keith has also worked as a volunteer tutor with The Groove Academy , a local community group for young musicians and performers aged 11-18. The Groove Agent Collective have performed in their own shows and at a number of local community events, including the Strawberry Hill Music Fair and the Teddington River Festival.
Keith is currently playing bass with the rock/soul/blues band Loose Lips.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Keith is currently playing bass with Loose Lips and continuing collaborate with manuela, Angela Ramsay, Glenn Hayler, RamsayGee, The Groove Academy, and pryce.
Influences: Pat Metheny, Robben Ford, Joni Mitchell, John Martyn, John Scofield, David Gilmour, Jan Akkerman, Steve Howe, Rory Gallagher, Pierre Moerlen, Mike Howlett, The Edge, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Richard Thompson, Gordon Giltrap, Dave Keir, Mark Keen, Mike Stern, Eberhard Weber, Bill Frisell, Jan Garbarek, Percy Jones, Pino Palladino, Jaco Pastorius, Jeff Berlin, Fred Thelonius Baker, Dave Stewart, Hatfield and the North, National Health, Soft Machine, 64 Spoons, Jakko M Jakszyk, Loose Tubes, Michael Rutherford, The Who, Ralph Towner, Pierre Bensusan, Allan Holdsworth, Counting Crows, Brian Blade Fellowship, Sarah McLachlan, Peter Gabriel, Tony Levin, Bjork, Francis Rocco Prestia, Tower of Power, Gary Willis, Jimmy Haslip, Jimmy Johnson, Brandon Ross, Kevin Breit, Marvin Sewell, Cassandra Wilson, etc. This week I have been listening to Martha Wainwright and John Martyn My desert island discs:

Pat Metheny 'Icefire' from 'Watercolors' Hatfield and the North 'Mumps' from 'The Rotters Club' Joni Mitchell 'Amelia' from 'Hejira' Focus 'Answers? Questions! Questions? Answers!' from Focus III Pink Floyd 'Echoes' from 'Meddle' Lyle Mays 'Slink' Brian Blade Fellowship 'Lifeline' Small Faces 'Tin Soldier' Joe Cocker 'With a Little Help From My Friends'

Sounds Like: I like to play bass fretless and use a 5 string - sometimes I like to dwell in that Tony Levin / Eberhard Weber thing, but also like 16th note Gary Willis/ Rocco Prestia kind of territory. I use quite a deep fundamental kind of sound with a good proportion of the attack coming from the drums rather than me! I really love playing as if the bass and drums are one instrument. For acoustic guitar, I play both finger style and flat pick, often using my weird Bb open tuning. I probably owe a lot of my approach to Joni Mitchell and John Martyn. For electric I play quite bluesy with a bit of jazz/soul/country thrown in - so I'm kind of aiming for a Robben Ford, Rory Gallagher, David Gilmour kind of approach, maybe with a touch of Jeff Tamelier?
