The S.M.I.L.E. has been in existence since 1981. At its conception, it was just a group of students who wanted more for their spiritual life than what the average churchgoer experiences. Through the initiative of F.D. Gayoba, then a theology student, the group grew little by little into a Bible Study group whose members shared each other’s insight a lot and fellowshipped a lot. It was formally given the name S.M.I.L.E. which stands for Student Ministry Involved in Loving Everyone and became the first student-led religious group in the then PUC. The S.M.I.L.E. in its early years attracted the elite among the students and this gave the group an unwilling “exclusive†status. Living up to its name and ideals, the group became active in church-related activities and was known for its not-so-traditional programming, welcoming everyone who would commit themselves to nurturing “younger†members. The group is in-reach by nature, catering mostly to its members inside the campus.
