Shiya
Whos that girl? The one with the melodic flow and mesmerizing beats. Her name is Shiya.
Dont let the name fool you, she reigns supreme as a lyrical princess, music producer and engineer.For the past five years, this graduate of Institute of Production and Recording has been busy in the lab cooking up tracks for and recording up and coming artists. Now, she says, its time to introduce herself to the performance world.
I started in the studio working behind the scenes as an engineer and got interested in the creative process, says the Minneapolis native. Music became an emotional outlet for me, where I could bring joy and release pain from myself and others.
Now, its time for her to emerge at the front of the performance pack.Influenced by such music greats as Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, Shiya says she wants her music to have a positive impact on her listeners.
I want to do music with substance, where people are actually being educated, says Shiya. Back in the day, music was educating and about something. I want to reflect that by creating music that is encouraging for young children and women, opposed to the imaging that is projected on women in hip hop (and music in general) today.
New to the performance game, she has already performed at Bryant Lake Bowl (as part of the Minneapolis Liberators Chitlin Circuit) and in Womentality (Soulistic Playhouses exploration of woman-mentality through spoken word, music, dance and storytelling)
Shiya is currently working on a full-length album (untitled) to be released in Winter 2009. Stay tuned, however, as she is sure to be heating up stages all this summer.
