About Me

"...the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
--Hermann Göring
Random thoughts:
My head is so huge, I can't even get up. You know, I have to have a team of assistants who hold my laptop over my supine body, and also hold my limp, useless arms so that I can feebly type this right now.
Ahh, the burdens of my huge brain.
But the benefits are good:
- I can put my brain in a jar and become an evil scientist's dream.
- I can pass for a space alien if planet Earth is ever invaded.
- My huge head can serve as a flotation device in the event of a water landing.
usually when people ask, "are you funny?" i say, "yeah, funny lookin'." that's an example of the sort of thing i say to amuse myself. another thing i say is, "huh." kind of a noncommittal grunt, in response to some thing for which i really don't have a response.
Situation A
-----------------
Person 1: "I have a boil on my ass."
Person 2: "Huh."
P1: "It really hurts."
P2: [scratches chin, looks around distractedly, looking for escape] "Huh."
P1: "My doctor says it's probably because I touch my ass too much, and don't wash my hands."
P2: [silence]
P1: "And now it's infected."
P2: [throws pyrotechnic device to the floor, creating huge plume of smoke, allowing him to escape the incredibly awkward conversation]
i guess i have some odd quirks. e.g., i hate it when people don't use their turn signals. i ride a motorcycle, and it's dangerous when people blab on their damn cell phones and just ... d r i f t... into the next lane without even checking if another vehicle (read: ME) is currently occupying the space that they are attempting to invade.
like to think that i can dance. but really, i just flail about. however, i usually enjoy doing it, so long as i can manage to ignore the shocked, open-mouthed stares of other people, the muttered, whispered conversations, snatches of which i can just make out ("oh my god... is he having a seizure?" "i didn't know the human body could look so graceless." "someone call a doctor." "i feel sick just watching that..." "i have an icky feeling in my bathing suit area...").
WHAT I DO for a living: I'm a space physicist... I help develop, launch, and analyze data from NASA satellite missions to study the space environment of the Earth and other planets of the Solar System. No kidding! It's the most fun job in the world.
Right now, I'm really getting into analyzing data from Saturn. Yes, Saturn. NASA sent a spacecraft called Cassini to travel there and learn about Saturn's space environment. One thing Cassini just learned is... one of Saturn's moons has liquid water geysers! How cool is that? It's a major discovery, one that explains an old mystery of why previous observations showed a very thin cloud of ionized water in the space around Saturn. They had guessed it came from Saturn's rings (believed to be icy chunks of rock), but it turns out it comes from geysers spewing out of this single moon called Enceladus.

I got a call two days ago with a bizarre opportunity: to spend 3-4 months out of every year in Korea, teaching at Kyung Hee University. If I accept, they will pay me $150K for my time. Does anyone ...

Hiring an Architect

If you want to build a good house, there are agreed-upon principles for a good foundation, walls that are straight, a roof that doesn't leak, and plumbing that works. If something is done poorly, it'...

Judgement and Choice

Judgement is an intrinsically human concept. The idea that we can assign value to actions, that some deeds are "good" and others "bad", is humanity's attempt to impose order, to make sense out of the...
