About Me

I've been performing publicly since 1988. I started after being mentored for two years by Todd Stratton. My first gig was in a tiny little bar at the Naples Hotel in Naples, NY. Soon after, I was playing at restaurants, coffee houses, and was a regular for 4 years at the Thomas Homestead Festival in the Finger Lakes area of New York. I moved to Southeastern Arizona in 1996 and after a long hiatus with only sporadic gigging have started performing again.I have not released any official CD's, just one of some songs I recorded for posterity, mainly because it is not a priority. I feel the magic is in the live performance. I've started thinking about what would be the best way to go. I'd love to have someone with field equipment come and record us, and then pick the best tracks. I'm a live performer. I don't like studio work. It's tedious and not very spontaneous. We are trying to reach a happy medium. At this time, I have a few songs for sale on this site. They were recorded in my apartment above Doris Lemke's Realty in Bisbee in 1996 or 1997. My band mates (at the time), Jon Messenger and Lance Grey, my dear deceased friend Bill Morrison and I set up our instruments in my dining room, Joe my bro set up a mike for us and said, "Go". We recorded "This River" and "The Ballad of Ben Johnson". Ben Johnson was recorded in one take, I think, and This River was done in two takes. That's my kind of studio work.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: My husband, Scott Muhleman, plays back-up and leads for me. Scott is an excellent blues harpman. He has played with DC Minner, Luther Jackson, Poppa Chubby, Tommy Patterson, Buzz Pearson, and Cat Crosby. He also sat in with Nappy Brown, Luther Allison, Johnny Nitro and the Door Slammers, Bart Ryan and many others. He has been playing blues harp since at least 1970. When he was a pre-teen, he was in a garage band with his school-mate Philo Cramer who went on to become the lead guitarist (and favorite audience antagonist) for the punk band Fear. Scott decided to gig with me to expand his repertoire. His style is straight-up and polished with an everpresent touch of the blues which lends itself beautifully to my vocals and guitar work.I also play with my band Hideaway for larger venues. Hideaway takes music from many eras and genres and serves them up acoustically -- from boogie woogie to contemporary hits. Popular and obscure tunes as compositions from our lead guitarist, Scott Baekeland.
Influences: Tom Waits, Loudon Wainwright III, Astrid Hadad, Maggie, Terri & Suzzy Roche, Ron Hawkins (from Lowest of the Low), John Prine, Sarita Montiel, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Ella Fitzgerald, Los Lobos, Woodie Guthrie, Christy Moore, Sylvio Rodriguez, Michelle Shocked, Mana, Mercedes Sosa, Odetta, too many to think. And thank.Early influences: Alice Bag - the ballsiest woman I ever met (we went to High School together!) and Linda Ronstadt - a Tucson homegirl. My grandpa introduced me to her music. She was the daughter of an associate of his. He was so proud of her. I just wanted to jump right in and do the same. Thanks for the gifts Alice and Linda!
Sounds Like: I have never been told I sound like anyone. People just say, "You have a beautiful voice. We love to hear you sing". My vocal style is clean with a range of about 3 octaves. I am equally comfortable with all of the genres I play including jazz/swing, r&r, c&w, folk, popular music and latin-american & Spanish songs. I am a chameleon when I sing. I've made it a point never to sing by any formula, instead opting to sing "in the moment". Sometimes it's sweet and mellow, other times it's angry and cynical, or low and mournful, or bright and happy. Singing in the moment keeps my performance spontaneous and lively. It is what draws people in. Sometimes I sound a little like Joni Mitchell, sometimes it's Peggy Lee, but mostly I sound like Becky Reyes.
