Band Members: My husband, Scott Muhleman, plays back-up and leads for me. Scott is an excellent blues harpman. He has played with DC Minner, Luther Jackson, Poppa Chubby, Tommy Patterson, Buzz Pearson, and Cat Crosby. He also sat in with Nappy Brown, Luther Allison, Johnny Nitro and the Door Slammers, Bart Ryan and many others. He has been playing blues harp since at least 1970. When he was a pre-teen, he was in a garage band with his school-mate Philo Cramer who went on to become the lead guitarist (and favorite audience antagonist) for the punk band Fear. Scott decided to gig with me to expand his repertoire. His style is straight-up and polished with an everpresent touch of the blues which lends itself beautifully to my vocals and guitar work.I also play with my band Hideaway for larger venues. Hideaway takes music from many eras and genres and serves them up acoustically -- from boogie woogie to contemporary hits. Popular and obscure tunes as compositions from our lead guitarist, Scott Baekeland.
Influences: Tom Waits, Loudon Wainwright III, Astrid Hadad, Maggie, Terri & Suzzy Roche, Ron Hawkins (from Lowest of the Low), John Prine, Sarita Montiel, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Ella Fitzgerald, Los Lobos, Woodie Guthrie, Christy Moore, Sylvio Rodriguez, Michelle Shocked, Mana, Mercedes Sosa, Odetta, too many to think. And thank.Early influences: Alice Bag - the ballsiest woman I ever met (we went to High School together!) and Linda Ronstadt - a Tucson homegirl. My grandpa introduced me to her music. She was the daughter of an associate of his. He was so proud of her. I just wanted to jump right in and do the same. Thanks for the gifts Alice and Linda!
Sounds Like: I have never been told I sound like anyone. People just say, "You have a beautiful voice. We love to hear you sing". My vocal style is clean with a range of about 3 octaves. I am equally comfortable with all of the genres I play including jazz/swing, r&r, c&w, folk, popular music and latin-american & Spanish songs. I am a chameleon when I sing. I've made it a point never to sing by any formula, instead opting to sing "in the moment". Sometimes it's sweet and mellow, other times it's angry and cynical, or low and mournful, or bright and happy. Singing in the moment keeps my performance spontaneous and lively. It is what draws people in. Sometimes I sound a little like Joni Mitchell, sometimes it's Peggy Lee, but mostly I sound like Becky Reyes.
