About Me
Blending their respective folk, rock, classical, country, celtic and ethnic influences, Charmed likes to refer to their sound as "evolutionary folk." Featuring singer-songwriters, Alicia Ultan (also on viola & guitar) and Bambi Wolf (also on piano & guitar), Charmed is an award-winning duo who has been performing together since 2001. In 2005, they released their debut CD, "Beautifully Twisted" to enthusiastic international reviews, won the New Mexico Music Commission's State Fair Talent Showcase in the category of Folk/Country/Americana, received a nomination by the New Mexico Music Awards for Best Instrumental Performance for “Innbydelsen†from "Beautifully Twisted," and were voted "Best Twisted Folk Duo†in Albuquerque The Magazine’s December 2005 issue. More recently, Charmed was voted Best Folk-Americana band in Albuquerque Alibi’s “Best of Burque†2008 issue. At the NM Music Awards this past May, 2009, Charmed was proud to be honored with 5 nominations and to win 2 awards for pieces from their 2nd CD, "BitterSuite 7," which was released this past December 2008. "BitterSuite 7" is a collection of 12 original, emotionally powerful songs and instrumentals featuring a full band and several esteemed guest musicians, taking their musical efforts to a new level. James Mahoney writes, “Like those in a lucid dream, this CD sustains a rich series of visions, whose vital presence, emotional immanence, and necessarily entertaining beauty, open out to living mysteries.†Mel Minter of the Alibi writes, "On its second CD, the "twisted folk" duo once again take on the darkness and find the light. They address troubling issues with an emotional intensity that sometimes invests their images with a near-magical reality. Yet the music somehow, almost inevitably finds reason for comfort and hope. Tenderness and humor help relieve the struggles too." Charmed has performed at many venues throughout New Mexico, including the Outpost Performance Space, Albuquerque's Summerfest on Civic Plaza, the Totah Theatre in Farmington, the Albuquerque Folk Festival, the New Mexico State Fair, Corrales Growers' Market and many more.
