OMAR KHALIF FOR BOARD OF EDUCATIONI would like to open my candidacy for the 2008 Board of Education election by thanking the 15,000 +’s people who voted and supported me in my 2006 campaign. As a resident of San Francisco for 19 years I have served two consecutive terms as a member of the (PAC) Parent Advisory Council, (PPS Ambassador) Parents for Public Schools and as School Site Council, in each of these positions I held the position of Chairperson. In August 08 I will begin serving my first term as a Board of Trustee at Gateway High.I’m the proud parent of four daughters – two currently attending SFUSD public schools, which are: Gateway High School a SFUSD public charter school, and KIPP Bayview Academy SFUSD public charter school; one in private school, Crystal Springs in Hillsborough Ca, and one in college at Prairie View A&M University a HBCU.I am seeking to represent parents’ voices through a position on the school board I believe that:*Parents should have the right to choose the school that meets their child’s and family’s needs, whether that school is located in their neighborhood or elsewhere in San Francisco.*Parents and students should be able to participate in any programs they deem successful to their future. i.e. JROTC, BAND, ARTS, SPORTS, etc.*No child should be advanced to the next grade if they are unable to demonstrate competency in their current grade level, nor, should they be allowed to transfer to another school within the district and allowed advancement.*While it’s important that we close the achievement gap, it is vital that we also address the opportunity gap and class gap that exists in our city and country.*In addition to being culturally competent, our teachers should also be curriculum compassionate!! i.e. subject matter. Teachers can be trained in the area of cultural competence, through staff development trainings.*Your children's future is Nonnegotiable!"
