free2air recordings began life as a new venture in 2003, injecting a breath of fresh air at a time when the record industry was awash with cynicism. free2air bucked the trend and was launched with a positive and optimistic philosophy. Headed by Craig Dimech, formerly of Incentive Music, the label set out to offer a diverse output of records by artists with longevity and the potential for wide spread, long term appeal.
CRAIG DIMECH: Craig spent 3-years at Incentive Music as head of A&R where he was responsible for signing & A&Ring such diverse Top 10 acts as WARRIOR, SANTOS, MATT DAREY, MARIO PIU and THE GENIUS CRU through to underground artists like DINO LENNY. His DJ career also spans 13 years and saw his residency at Peach secure him a place in the prestigious DJ mag Top 100 in 1999 at Number 90. Such extensive roots have provided Craig with a finally tuned ear for a hit and the depth of experience to carry his label forward.
Commenting on the venture at the outset Dimech said: The current climate is one of doom and gloom. With this in mind I firmly believe the best form of defence is attack, therefore free2air will be nurturing artists and records irrespective of genre and providing the necessary platform to take them to a wider audience. I am incredibly excited about the challenge and feel that along side some great records we have everything in place to make it work.
The first release on free2air was possibly one of the biggest dance tracks of 2003 and the perfect launch pad for the label. Dino Lenny Vs. The Housemartins Change The World was championed from an early stage by Pete Tong at Radio 1 (twice an Essential New Tune) and by the specialist dance press. The labels first release got its full release on April 14 2003 and is still considered one of the most influential dance records of recent times.
With its refreshing approach and sheer determination, free2air has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned.
