A BRIEF HISTORY
2005:
Sugarhouse Wynd is a project that has been growing since 2005 when Ross and Stu's high school blues band ended after a short but enjoyable life, winning the high school talent show and playing a series of jumping shows in the months after. A drunken conversation at a New Year's party in 2004 about starting a band has grown into what now is Sugarhouse Wynd.
2006:
After the demise of their high school shenanigans, Ross and Stu kept jamming and sharing ideas and soon they decided to create another band from the ashes of their previous musical project.
Ross had a younger brother Scott, who was a budding drummer at this point and had been playing drums for a few years. After a few jams at Monifieth's 4real Centre, ran by local legend Musical Dave Liddell, riffs were jammed and songs grooves were grooved. Most of the next year was spent just jamming and having fun with music and really learning how to play in a band situation. Influenced strongly by sounds of blues, 2006 was a quiet and modest year for Sugarhouse Wynd, only doing the occasional instrumental gig and playing mostly Highway Blues and 12 bar improvisations.
In late 2006 the band though it was time to take the band to the next level and so Matt Sampson was adopted into the Sugarhouse Wynd family. That winter was spent jamming and experimenting with ideas and the new dimension of having a vocalist for the first time, during this time the first songs were written.
2007:
Highway Blues was still the deep influence at the core of the original songs but by early 2007 a second wave of songs were written with a much more mature and rockier feel. Much happier with the direction the band was going musically, they continued to play and write in such a style.
The first official gig as a four piece was at their local pub in Monifieth, the tiny but legendary music venue 'The Vault', with it's history of bizzare gigs and packed out attendance, this gig was much the same, filled to the brim with curious and hopeful supporters of the old high school band and many other local music fans, the gig was a total success and is one of the best receptions to date.
2007 brought a wave of gigs and alot of experience for the band, having played with lots of big named local bands and playing in top venues such as Glasgow's Renfrew Ferry. Working on building their collage of songs, the band took the last few months of 2007 out to rehearse and write.
2008:
2008 brings new life to the band with gigs starting in March and a whole new wave of new material ready for the stage. A sponsorship deal with Roberts guitars has already been made and with the coming of a new drummer, ex-'clockwork gun' Jonny Reid joins the band bringing with him a new leap of sound, inspiration and drive for the band, 2008 should be a great year...
