About Andy Allen:
Andy has been seriously collecting records for 20 years now and DJing for the past 15. From his roots in soul music his style has grown to incorporate disco, boogie, jazz-funk, jazz, nu jazz, Brazilian, broken-beat, deep house, folk-funk and various hybrids in between.
After numerous DJ spots in and around Birmingham throughout the 90s, including his Essential Soul Selection show on Premier FM, a pirate radio station, he returned to his home city of Leeds in 2001. There he became part of the respected Speak Your Peace collective and together with Simon Harrison hosted the long running weekly Abstract Soul sessions. Along with showcasing local bands Abstract Soul featured guest spots from some of the scene’s leading DJs such as Wai Wan (Earth Project), Jonny Miller (Jus’ Listen/Wah Wah 45s) and Simon S (Break Reform/Futuristica).
He has been involved with UK Vibe magazine, now a web based project ( www.ukvibe.org ), since it was established by Steve Williams in the early 90s and his Soul Asylum section features monthly reviews of the best new releases. Andy is also a regular contributor to Simon Harrison’s Basic-Soul site ( www.basic-soul.co.uk )
More recently Andy has relocated to Vancouver, Canada where he can be found spinning at various venues around the city. Watch this space!
