Red China was birthed in a small upstairs apartment with bad windows and sensitive neighbors in Royal Oak Michigan, July 2003. The first session consisted of Mike Ross, Kirk Van Husen and Curtis Majeske playing psychedelic Sesame Street keyboards then going to the movies; by the second session Jason Worden was enlisted. The next week ushered in the short-lived-but-oh-so-magnificent-and-indispensible Reade Period. Reade McCardell was the impetus behind such Red China classics as "Goddamn" and "The Golden Fish", but sadly split that fall for mysterious religion in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania (and returned for two sessions over a year later, which produced the likes of "Mayonnaise" and "It Sounds Like Hitler Golfing"). Consider Reade our Syd Barrett, our own Lone Pigeon. Soon after the Departure of McCardell, Matthew Mattoon came in on drums and thus began the first spate of Red China live shows, a weekly gig at the 7 Brothers Bar in Hamtramck, where such classic gems as "Ill Lungs" and "Pops on the Bass" were showcased. Good ole' George, always urging us to "play something hot." As Van Husen's contributions became sporadic and Mattoon split for other musical climes, Ross and Worden (after a move to the basement and the addition of a drum kit) began creating twisted little pop songs on their own. The addition of Bill Roberts (via Real Detroit ad) brought in The Bill Years, which lasted but a few months. Exactly one live show was featured in the summer of 2004, on the campus of Oakland University in 100-degree heat with a Dancing Mongolian. That winter brought in Frank on the drums. Conversation:
Ross: "Is this a dagger I see before me, the handle toward my hand?"
Frank: "That which hath made them drunk hath made me bold!"
Ross: "I have done the deed. Didst thou hear a noise?"
And thus was born the current Great Era of the Red Chinese Regime.
With 45 full CDR volumes of original material and 5 unreleased CDR albums, Red China's first official release (a greatest hits compilation), entitled "Imprecision... Impregnio... Impossumal!" finally hit in January 2006, with much thanks going to Odidlee Scott Howitt and his Loco Gnosis Productions .
