About Me

Every day an endless stream of celebrity and cliché is forced down my throat. I open the daily rag to get my fix of the Pete Doherty’s, Peaches Geldofs, Noel Fieldings. Somewhere in there, I think I’m supposed to be jealous of their supposed ‘rock and roll’ lifestyle. Rolling out of some soulless pub in Shoreditch, racking up to Leicester Square premieres and scoring coke in Camden clubs. But they mean nothing to me. I will never be a part of that world even if I wanted. I don’t live on the northern line. My parents are not Harley Street doctors, property tycoons or Hollywood actors that I can siphon cash from. If you’re still reading this I’m guessing neither are yours. Somewhere we have lost what rock and roll is about. We pay absurd prices for festival tickets before we even know the headlines acts, building up to our 3 days of excess by saving enough money to last us a fortnight in a sun baked Mediterranean resort. Instead we wallow in filth, struggling from tent to tent trying to catch every band dubbed as the next big thing, paying absurd prices for flat lager and stale bacon buns. Music has become wallpaper, a passing adornment on our lives to be ripped down and replaced as trends change. It’s used to sell hair gel, soft drinks and mobile phones. To be true to your art is to stretch yourself, to experiment, to open yourself honestly and be willing to fail, to be ridiculed, to pick yourself up again. To suffer giddying highs and suicidal lows. There are Van Gogh’s and Ikea prints in the world. One is true art. Designed neither for pleasure nor profit, but to convey a meaning held sacred by the artist. In music this has got lost. We satisfy ourselves with the Ikea prints, art for profit. We have drab indie bands, rolling off the same manufactured pop conveyor belt we try so hard to avoid. They roll out instantly forgettable tunes for us to fork out our pennies on, without telling us any of their beliefs or convictions apart from the odd cry of ‘stop the war’ or ‘climate change is unacceptable.’ Pathetically trying to re create 1977, failing to notice the world has moved on with the unique ignorance reserved for the British middle class. Treating music like a career in banking or teaching. Scouring the cut price John Lennon biographys and the Rolling Stones back catalogue like they are text books. Kicking out cliche in linear fashions from age old formulas.
