DON MEERS: musician... filmmaker... vocalist... soundtrack composer... sample freak... journey agent... relentless traveler ...
cinematic : apopalyptic : piercing
"...if they ever remake Blade Runner, Don Meers is the man for the soundtrack..." [Canberra Times]
Don Meers is an electronic producer who is not only a filmmaker himself, but whose highly evocative music has been chosen by many others to feature in soundtracks. He has worked as a composer for film and television himself, while his albums for the Groovescooter label have long been lauded for their filmic quality, whether it's the frenetic electro-jazz of his early releases, the lush downbeat ambiences of his much praised LP Train Noise, or the more vocal heavy, apocalyptic turns of his latest album Splint. Splint masterfully draws all his moody tangents together in a rush of electronics, samples, jazz drumming and fragile, poetic acoustics. Meers early live shows are still talked about - when double bass, samplers, keys and guitar collided - however in more recent years, he turned his vision towards solo laptop and visuals shows, which took a more ambient approach. He has now retired from live shows completely to focus more heavily on film production. In the meantime he continues to create moody music, remix other artists, collaborate with others and turn out intriguing music arrangements, such as his recent reworking of the James Bond Theme. His most recent collaborations have been with Inga Liljestrom and Melbourne's All India Radio. A remix album called Track Works also saw many of his compositions remixed by others, including one of his earliest releases for Groovescooter, a masterful remake of the theme from the Six Million Dollar Man. However it is his original compositions which continue to draw interest and be licensed for films and televsion.
"...Bowie/Eno styled moody music... A local version of a David Holmes soundtrack" [Spectrum, Sydney Morning Herald]
"Soaring. Sad. Superb." [Bar Tender]
LATEST LP:
DON MEERS: "SPLINT" This 4th apopalyptic LP builds a sonic bridge between the frenetic electro-jazz of his earliest work, with the downbeat cinematics of his lushly orchestrated instrumentals. With larger vocal contributions, it's been compared to everyone from David Sylvian and Jeff Buckley, to Brian Eno and Bowie.

"...This is music for the cinema of the mind... " Hypnotic....." [SX Magazine]
CD OF THE WEEK"..Meers has achieved that
important quality of making music that doesn..t date. Beats that often
fall on the darker side are the background to an array of melodic ideas
from the jazzy end of the spectrum to the more electronic..
Train Noise is a sonic journey.. One of the most impressive releases of
the year.. saturated in a syrup of jazzy influenced melodies, soothing
beats and swathed in a deep cinematic cloth .."
" [3D World]
"...Train Noise is as
immediately unsettling and familiar as the album title would suggest,
the broad and abstract sonic soundscapes a melancholic realm where hope
reigns supreme yet each click of the mouse sends a new shiver up the
spine. Gorgeously introspective, but comfortably so.
..." [The Brag]
"...Train Noise is a masterfully realised excursion
through down-tempo electronica and jazz inflected soundscapes; a record
to which the term cinematic will inevitably and deservedly be applied."
" [Revolver]
ALBUM OF THE WEEK..." [Radio 2SER]
