I have Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE)and Epilepsy and have been spending most of my time and energy and almost three years dealing with it. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly called lupus, is a chronic autoimmune disorder that can affect virtually any organ of the body. In lupus, the body's immune system, which normally functions to protect against foreign invaders, becomes hyperactive, forming antibodies that attack normal tissues and organs. My lupus affects my CNS, brain, joints, kidneys, heart, and skin. Lupus is characterized by periods of illness, called flares, and periods of wellness, or remission. I have not been in any type of remission in over two years though.
Because its symptoms come and go and mimic those of other diseases, lupus is difficult to diagnose. It took me almost 10 years for a proper diagnosis. There is no single laboratory test that can definitively prove that a person has this complex illness. You can learn more by checking out www.lupus.org and www.lupusresearchinstitute.org. As an educator, I truly believe that knowledge is power! You can also help by donating to Lupus Research Institute (the website mentioned above) as 100% of proceeds go to lupus research. There has not been a new medicine approved to treat lupus in almost 50 years. Mostly young women in their 20s, 30s and 40s are dying of this horribly painful disease, but research funding for this particular disease has been limited the last eight years but I'm not going to say why. President Obama, however, has already increased funding within his first months of presidency.I love my girl, Zoey, my pup. She is my everything. I am addicted to magazines. I'm super girlie, yet a huge sports fanatic. I love baseball especially; my Cubbies and Texas Rangers. I laugh at stupid things. I'm often told that my facial expressions are "priceless." I am a huge animal lover. My family has always treated our pets as part of our family because they are. They are beautiful souls, and I honestly believe that my quality of life would greatly suffer if I had to live without them. I am always watching the news or looking on the Internet because I'm obsessed with knowing what's going on in the world. I HEART shopping and probably could be a professional buyer, no doubt. I minored in fashion. Now shopping is a different experience because my body has changed so much from my most recent lupus flare and seizure meds...STRESS from my life. I'm half the Kaylee I used to be. Ghost stories, spirits, afterlife, etc. absolutely fascinate me and always has. It pretty much runs in my family, we all watch Ghost Hunters and Paranormal State lol. OH, yes, I carry my camera in my purse everywhere I go and must take pics of everything and everyone. I can be shy and reserved, yet quirky and beyond entertaining.I love teaching college and mentoring, and miss all of my former students. I learned so much from them, and I don't think they realized that. I hope that someday I will be well enough to get back into teaching, mentoring, or something to do with working with people. It was the most amazing experience of my life and I really do miss it everyday. Have I mentioned that I'm also a writer? I've noticed that most writers' "about me" sections are all filled out while others are not. We tend to ramble because writing is our most comfortable form of communication, at least for me it is. I was print journalist for a while. I always wanted to work for a magazine. However, the last few years I've been doing more research studies and working to publish in scholarly research journals that make my head hurt since working on my master's degree. Now, I'm doing freelance for both. That will make your eyes bleed.I can't stand abusers, arrogant, homophobic, racists, or ANYONE abusive towards others and/or animals. I am a huge children's rights and animal rights advocate. I don't understand people who think they are better than others, especially bullies, and now there is cyber bullying. It is unbelievable what children and teens these days have to go through in schools as well as outside of school because of Internet sites like myspace and facebook. They're supposed to be fun. But it makes kids easier targets to be harassed and abused. These poor kids can't escape it, it's everywhere, and we NEED to stop it. There needs to be guidelines, rules and punishments. This was all too real for 13 year-old Megan Meier who commit suicide after a former friend's mother pretended to be a 16 year-old boy on myspace, befriended Megan for weeks, and then used Megan's depression against her, posted horrific things about her, called her names, and said she did not deserve to live. All of this, just to see if Megan was saying anything negative about her daughter, which she was not. Please take the Megan Pledge to stop this from happening to someone else. http://www.myyearbook.com/meganpledge.I'm incredibly passionate towards social issues (have you noticed?), and have become very interested in politics the last several years. I don't care what issue you are passionate towards, as long as you are passionate for something and pay attention to what is going on in our country. I don't believe it's just our right to vote, I believe it's our responsibility to become educated towards the issues at hand and vote in any and every election we can. I am very anxious and excited about what is in store for our country the next four years under the leadership of President Elect Barack Obama. I'm not naive and expect to see change overnight or within a year or two. I know it will take a while, unlike most people who are already pouting.Honestly, I'm going through a huge life change at the moment and I feel confident and empowered by my major decision. Always believe that you should be treated with kindness and respect; that you deserve it. I made a promise to myself, and I kept it. I'm anxious to see what life has to offer me in the future, and now I think I will be able to live past 30. :)
