About Me

Alana Macías is a Nicaraguan-American writer, arts organizer, and activist. Her plays and performance pieces are best known for their mixture of wildly divergent cultural influences, forms, sounds, and literary references to form a theatrical experience that embraces the changing, expanding, and transcultural meaning of what it is to be an American at the turn of the twenty-first century. Alana's parents were guerillas in the Nicaraguan civil war and she was born in a make-shift hospital in the ruins of post-earthquake Managua. Her upbringing was radical in every sense of the word, as her mother was an Irish-American former Maryknoll nun and her father was the college-educated son of Nicaraguan peasants, traumatized from extreme poverty, war, and exile. She received her MFA in Playwriting/Writing for Performance at CalArts. Her mentors are Suzan-Lori Parks, Erik Ehn, Carl Hancock Rux, Anne Garcia-Romero, and Luis Alfaro.Prior to CalArts she studied acting and writing at the New World School of the Arts in Miami, the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University, and received her B.A. in political science, sociology, and humanities at the University of Texas at Dallas. Her work has been produced and/or developed by the Theater Key West New Plays Festival, the Ford Amphitheater Latino Playreading Series in L.A., Ground Zero Theater Company and Kitchen Dog Theater in Dallas. She was a Finalist for both the 2007 Sundance Screenwriters' Lab and the 2007 Jerome Fellowship at the Playwrights' Center.

My Interests

Violence and what it does to people. Power and how people control it. Funny things too. Composition on stage and screen. Texture in word and image. Mixing mediums in live performance.

I'd like to meet:

Designers and artists, in the box and out. Artists interested in cross-pollination: pieces that are at the same time visual art, music (electronic, acoustic, both) theater, and architecture.Comandante Cero otra vez, because I didn't realize who I was meeting when I was younger. Who knew revolutionaries could be so funny about their storied violence:

Music:

I'd like to work with an electronic composer who can also use processed acoustic instruments and found sound to create a collaged sound track for theater.

Movies:

I wrote "Eminent Domain." 2006 Sundance Screenwriters' Lab Finalist.
