Izo FitzRoy & The Royal Bastards

About Me

You could say that 22 year-old Izo FitzRoy was always destined for big things. Born into an aristocratic family void of any musical ambition, she was the exception to the rule, proven in 2003 when she became ‘The Guardian’s Young Composer of the Year’. However, it was only when Izo made her way to Glasgow that her musical character really began to emerge. With a voice distinctly reminiscent of Janis Joplin, Izo charms audiences with her lyrical wit and sharp social observations, her distinctive song writing style setting her apart from her musical peers. Her first gig was at Go North Festival in Aberdeen where she was hailed as “the blackest white girl in Scotland.” In 2007 Tatler magazine reported that she was “ an excitingly fresh and unique artist” and in September 2008 she was nominated "Scotland's Most Stylish Musician" alongside Sharleen Spiteri and Bobby Gillespie. It was around this period when Izo was joined by bassist Dave Gillies and drummer Anthony O’ Donnell who are affectionately known as The Royal Bastards. With influences ranging from Ben Folds to Ray Charles, and having played both classical and jazz piano since the age of seven, Izo combines highly technical piano melodies with fat funky bass riffs and occasional electric guitar, to produce a dirty blues sound that perfectly synthesises with her soulful voice. Her performances combine a feisty sense of humour along with a voice that is truly unique and captures the best of mo town. She'll make your feet dance like it's 1971....
