There's no such thing as just one thing.

About Me

Moose (a.k.a. Mike Barber, Horation Hornblower, Dad, etc.) comes to Seattle by way of Baltimore and New Jersey. But musically by way of jazz and funk. If the music has that Feel, then it will always have that Appeal.A student of Seattle's burnin'-est trumpeteer, Tony Grasso, your MooseMan is comfortable in myriad musical settings: from inside jazz combos to outside avant-garde troupes, or from funk horn lines to big band section playing.

Recent Projects:

From Summer 2004 to Spring 2007, I was the trumpeter for Altered States of Funk. They performed at Bumbershoot in 2005, were voted Best R&B/Soul Band in the Seattle Weekly Music Awards, played sold out prime date shows at Nectar and ToST, played every outdoor festival in Seattle, and started a new Chop Suey tradition called Funkgazm. From time to time, I play in a few groups: Kissing Potion Seattle Superfly Tribute Band The Owl n Thistle's "Big Bang Big Band" the Blue Monks jazz duoI have had the pleasure of jumping up on stage with or subbing in: Delta Nove Olympic Sound Collective Rich Wetzel's Groovin' Higher Jazz Orchestra SCCC Big BandFrom 2002 to 2004, I played in a jazz standards quartet called the Broken Fours Quartet.Since 2004, I have had the distinct honor of running the Jazz II Big Band at Ballard High School, here in Seattle. Sharing great music with great students and great audiences is the experience of a lifetime. I also had the great pleasure to teach the McClure Middle School ASAP Jazz Band from 2000 to 2005.

Altered States of Funk

The Seattle Weekly had this to say:

Soul/R&B Altered States of Funk

Having band members named Mr. T, Moose, Low End Theory, Funk Doc, Sasquatch, and Da Funkscribe means you best be one funky band, and Altered States of Funk definitely pull it off. With each one exploring their own little improvisational niche, Altered States of Funk achieve jams that are equal parts Southern soul and hip-shaking grooves. They made audiences get on their feet at Nectar, EMP's Liquid Lounge, and Tost. Throughout the month of May, you can catch the band at 9 p.m. Wednesdays in the Musiquarium Lounge above the Triple Door. BRIAN J. BARR
The Seattle Weekly also had this to say about Altered States in the Notable Shows section when we put together "Funkgazm 2006 at Chop Suey":

Funkgazm 2006: Altered States of Funk + Marmalade + DJ Kutz + Otha Major

Just what it sounds like, friends..a perfect chance to get all publicly hot and sweaty while you can still blame it on the weather. Altered States are continually regarded as one of the best funk outfits in town, and the Marmalade crew has held down their night at Fremont's ToST for ages. They know how to get you on, so get up! Altered States of 2006

2006 has been one heck of a year.  It's far from over, but it certainly has weighed heavily on me.  January saw the arrival of my beautiful daughter, and when Altered States returned in Marc...
