The Northern Refugees

About Me

Is rock and roll dead? Well the guys from The Northern Refugees do not think so. The group who makes their home in Daytona Florida brings that good old fashioned rock show every time they fire it up and hit the stage. With rebel guitar antics, pounding bass, slammin’ drums and whiskey drenched vocals The Northern Refugees will definitely make your head spin. All of the musicians hail from different parts of the country and each have their own set of influences that make The Northern Refugees sound so unique. But it is not rocket science. Hook up some amps, set up some drums, hang some microphones, plug in, turn everything on and sounds from the past and present begin to wail as the band hammers out cover that range from The Jimi Hendrix Experience to Willie Nelson and well crafted originals that lay down a groove that is definitely all their own.
The group began in late 2005 with the meeting of Eric Weiler and Nathan Cummings. With another local musician they borrowed a friend’s garage and set out to create what would later become The Northern Refugees. Their first attempt forming the band resulted with no success and all three members continued on their separate ways. Eric continued playing well received solo acoustic shows throughout central and south Florida. After winning the 2006 Backstage Pass Talent Competition Eric set his sights on once again teaming with Nathan to form a band.
Learning from their previous failed attempt Eric and Nathan ran into fellow musician Scott Gelber. After telling Scott of their plan and their need for a bass player, Scott joined the boys for a jam session. After an afternoon of playing and discussion Eric and Nathan agreed that Scott was the addition that they have been searching for. After a few months of writing and rehearsing the group took the name The Northern Refugees and began bringing their music to the masses. Within the first couple shows it became apparent that this group had one of the biggest drawing powers in the area. It is not uncommon to arrive at a show only to find a line of people stretching out of a club or venue.
The Northern Refugees has spent the majority of 2006 playing their music along the east coast of Florida. They have frequented many smoky clubs, outdoor venues, private parties and jamborees. At the end of 2006 the band entered the studio to produce a new demo. After spending a day of pre-production at World Recording Studio in Daytona Beach the group huddled down for 7 days and nights and emerged with their new batch of songs. This spring the group is celebrating 2007 with a diverse batch of shows and a new fire that only a new year could bring. The band thanks you for all your support in 2006 and we hope to see you out at the shows this coming year.
