After a hit on the U.K. charts with the track Little Things under her belt, (using her birth name Marissa Anglin) "PhoeNix" landed in the United States. Born & raised in South London , she was signed to the Sony U.K distributed Black Kat label. England started to take notice of her exotic, striking eyes (PhoeNix hails from a combination of German, Egyptian, and Jamaican heritage) and deep, unique voice as she opened performances for Outkast and 112. Even after EMI publishing sent her to Sweden to collaborate with chart-topping, Murlyn Productions, (Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Celine Dion) PhoeNix came to the states in search of the edgy, hip-hop and rock influenced sound that was true to her musical vision.
Answering a Village Voice newspaper ad while living in the New York City area led to collaborating with producer/songwriter, Alex Houton of Wu Shu Entertainment Group. PhoeNix was a fountain of material, recalls Houton. We had to prioritize which tracks we wanted to cut first because shes very prolific and has a very clear vision of who she wants to be as an artist. The results were tracks like "Glad", with an acoustic hip-hop/rock vibe, blending seamlessly with the more thought- provoking, melodic urban pop as in "Beyond The Superficial" and "Accidentally Sexy".PhoeNix co-wrote and did backing vocals on a house track with "Gerideau" called Changes.
