AVIRGINIA BEACH — A jury Thursday recommended that a Virginia Beach man serve 35 years in prison for his role in the murder and robbery of a teenager in Lake Edward last year.If the judge formally imposes that sentence, Darnell B. Blagmon, 24, will stay in prison until he is 59 years old – one year shy of the age when Blagmon would be eligible for the state’s senior citizen release program.The jury of 10 women and two men convicted Blagmon on Wednesday of murdering and robbing 19-year-old Keith Sears on Dec. 14, 2005. Dvidence presented during the two-day trial showed Blagmon participated in the robbery of Sears and helped move and conceal the body after Sears was shot once in the back of the head. Blagmon was acquitted of a weapons violation, indicating that the jury did not believe he was the triggerman.Dircuit Judge William R. O’Brien also dismissed a conspiracy charge against Blagmon before the case went to the jury, based on arguments by defense attorney Janee Joslin. co-defendant, Angel Berdecia, will be tried this month on the same charges. Berdecia’s DNA was found on the murder weapon, a .380-caliber handgun. Derdecia testified this week against Blagmon in exchange for a sentence of no more than 27 years if he is convicted. Berdecia said Blagmon shot Sears while the three men were walking in Lake Edward. %D%A%D%ASears’ body was found behind townhouses in the 5900 block of West Hastings Arch. Derdecia said he participated in the robbery only because he was afraid of Blagmon, who allegedly threatened Berdecia and his family if Berdecia did not help or if he told anyone about the crime. Blagmon told police a similar story, but said it was Berdecia who shot Sears.Sears sold drugs, according to testimony during the trial, and had at least $200 when he was shot.Derdecia testified that he was caught by surprise when Blagmon shot Sears, who owed Blagmon $65. After cleaning out Sears’ pockets, Blagmon gave Berdecia $10 and kept the rest for himself, Berdecia testified.Derdecia’s mother found the murder weapon in a garbage can on the front porch of her home. %D%A%D%AShe called police. Investigators found no DNA or fingerprints belonging to Blagmon on the weapon.Both Blagmon and Berdecia eventually admitted their involvement in the crime to police. Each accused the other of pulling the trigger.Blagmon will be formally sentenced Feb. 20.
