I am a film that Paramount Pictures commissioned Lou Adler to direct. I was theatrically screened in 1984 at Film Forum in NYC. Then I was shown on Night Flight on USA Network in 1986. Then I was shelved. I survived only via bootleg on ebay for many years. I managed to get shown on VH1's Rock and Roll show in 2001.
My cast includes: Diane Lane, Ray Winstone, Laura Dern, Paul Cook (Sex Pistols), Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), Fee Waybill (The Tubes), Paul Simonon (The Clash).
My goal is to make as many people aware of me, so that Paramount Pictures will finally go ahead and release me to DVD. I mean, it's been 25 years!
I have inspired many GRRL bands and am the ultimate film that witnesses Hard Punk turn into New Wave. I PRE-date Madonna but could be the exact road map she could have followed.
Plot: Corrine Burns retreats far into plans for her band, The Fabulous Stains, after her mother's death. So far that she gets them (she and two cousins) on a tour with a washed-out glam-rock group and a rising British punk band, radically changes her appearance, attracts a cult following and national media attention. With luck like this, what could go wrong?
Tagline: These Girls Created Themselves.
Trivia: Diane Lane refused to dye her hair for the several changes of hair color through out the movie. They used a series of different wigs with different lengths to simulate hair growth/roots instead.
The final sequence of the film was shot and added .. initial reaction to the film was mixed seeing it was a 'negative' ending. Laura Dern is noticeably taller in these shots.
Laura Dern's mother, Diane Ladd, refused to give her permission to travel to shoot on location, as she felt Dern was too young. Dern sued for legal emancipation, won it, and did the movie anyway.
Jodie Foster was offered the role of Corinne, but it was ultimately played by Diane Lane.
Now a famous character actor, Ray Winstone was a young upstart on the film. He would lose his temper constantly and throw things at people (including phones still plugged into walls).
Fee Waybill was convinced this movie would make him a huge movie star. Sadly, the film was never released.
There is a mini documentary that was shot called THE MAKING OF LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: THE FABULOUS STAINS! directed by Sarah Jacobson. It aired on the IFC channel in 2000. It now can be found as an extra on the documentary: RAINBOW MAN: JOHN 3:16 DVD.
