Painted Cakes started as the mostly instrumental ideas of Elias Reitz. Now its become more, integrating drummer Andrew Kitchen and Shumit DasGupta on fretless-electric bass. Andrew and Shumit's past projects are mind blowing; Transmission, Poignant Plecostomus and Larvel. Seeking out this past material will help make more sense of what's happening in this music. In performance, the music can range from small/etherial/pretty to aggressive/intense/angular. Elias Reitz is also a member of Gojogo (www.galaxia-platform.net) and Triangle (www.triangleband.com). Gojogo has an album released on Galaxia Records called "All Is Fair" (www.galaxia-platform.com). Elias also recorded on the release from Bright Black Morning Light out on Matador. (www.matadorrecords.com). Painted Cakes is coined from a Buddhist saying, "Painted cakes do not satisfy hunger". There is in fact quite a debate about this idea that apparently has spanned centuries.
