Presenting (with a smile)
Pink Flood and the Magenta Tide found it’s beginnings in the later months of 2005 in Olney, Il. Born of a desire to enrich and broaden the scope of our local music scene, members of multiple bands and musicians of taste and esteem (with a penchant for light-hearted and good-natured fun) from the surrounding area have been consistently gravitating towards Pink Flood as their preferred avenue for self-expression and as a reliable vehicle for putting smiles on the faces of both die-hard fans and new-comers alike. Rigors and stresses of day-to-day life be gone! Troubles subside! There is no room for you at a Pink Flood Show!!!
This influx of quality musicians from varied backgrounds, but like-minded in pursuit of fun and musical excellence, has made Pink Flood and the Magenta Tide into one of the largest and most original bands to ever come out of this area. The roots of Pink Flood lie in it’s rhythm section, with founding members Jeff Tennyson (Drums), Jessica Bahl (Rhythm Guitar, Aux. Percussion, Vocals), and Dustin Steinman (Bass, Trumpet, Vocals). Carefully weaving the inspired and driving rhythms of Tennyson with the rock-solid, funk-wah of Jess’s guitar and the complexly melodic turns of Steinman’s bass, Pink Flood was almost instantly bringing originality and zest into the local music scene. Add to that the whiskey-and-cigarettes, amazingly earthy qualities of Jess’s voice, Dustin’s penchant for vocal variation and (nearly pathological) desire to get some brass in the mix, and Tennyson’s entrancing behind-set-showmanship, and we find that (as a three piece) Pink Flood already had a huge sound- Funky and soulful, relentlessly fun and entertaining. It would have been enough, but we wanted more!
And we certainly found it, as within a few short months of our first practice we were joined by three new members, all extraordinary in their own right. Alayna Steinman (Alto Sax, Aux. Percussion, Vocals) brought to the band some phenomenal songwriting, a dusky and sexy voice, surprising saxophone work, and an electric on-stage presence. The delightful Ms. Anna King (Trombone, Aux. Percussion, Vocals) hesitantly showed up with her trombone and quickly became indispensable, providing mellow trombone accompaniment, a crystal clear soprano vocal range (complete with an exceptional ear for harmony), and an extraordinary knack for instantly picking up complimentary and contrasting rhythms on any percussion instrument she grabs. Finally, snatched away from the world of classic country and obscure genius in nearly every classic and contemporary genre, Blind Dr. Bus (Lead Guitar, Vocals) rounded out our early line-up flawlessly with his down-home songwriting, unpretentious and flowing counter-melodies on guitar, and a voice that takes you back in time with nuances of a lifetime’s experience surfacing and subsiding note after note.
Change comes to everything, and as Alayna’s career forced her to take a semi-sabbatical from the Flood, we gladly welcomed Brother Jim Moore (Trombone, Keyboard) to the fold. Jim’s thunderous trombone work was instantly a welcome addition and when he chooses to trade in the brass for the keys, the good times just keep on rolling as our sound moves into new dimensions. Finally, the addition of Tiffany Taylor (Alto Saxaphone), has once more brought the sweet sounds of the Saxaphone back to the Pink Flood show!
Constantly embracing the fluidity of life, Pink Flood and the Magenta Tide has developed a reputation for not only providing exciting variations (both in terms of style and instrumentation) from song to song, that keep the dancers on the floor and the sitters happily surprised, but also for welcoming guest musicians to the stage. The combined experiences of our members has brought us into contact with dozens of fantastic musicians from highly varied backgrounds and locations and, consequently, we often find ourselves transformed into a 7, 8, or even 9 piece band, with guests adding not just their instruments and talent, but also their hearts to the evening’s performance- A superb treat for us and an enticing, one-of-a-kind experience for the audience!!!
Occasionally mixing in carefully selected covers, but concentrating predominantly on funky and classically soulful (occasionally quirky and constantly fun) originals that have an instantly familiar feel, a beat that demands listeners to get up and shake it, and an over-all tone that screams “It’s time for some fun!â€, Pink Flood and the Magenta Tide offers a truly unique musical experience and a relentlessly exciting atmosphere… we hope to hear from you soon!
