5TH ANNUAL KONA SURF FILM FESTIVAL FILM SYNOPSIS:
The Lost Wave: Was surfing born only in Hawaii? This film chronicles the surf expedition of noted surf historian, explorer and filmmaker Sam George, joined by pro surfers Holly Beck and Joe Curren, as they travel to country of Sao Tome which George visited six years earlier to unravel the mystery of the villagers who ride the waves on a tiny islet off the coast of this remote island West African nation.
Tomorrow/Today: Tomorrow/Today fuses animated dream sequences into reality, where each surfer performs his repertoire of unbelievable tricks. Featuring the actions, words, and thoughts of five of the most progressive and relevant surfers in the world: Dane Reynolds, Bobby Martinez, Mike Losness, Yadin Nichol, and Clay Marzo
Zampa: World Premiere! By Chad Campbell, director of 'the 5th Symphony Document' and 'the Blueprint'. This action-documentary follows dual citizen (Japan and U.S.) Jun Jo and friends to the point breaks, beauty, and tragedy of Sri Lanka and the famed river mouths of Japan. (this film contains some explicit language)
The Project: World Premiere! Local boy Kainoa Behasa brings us the latest from the Big Island bodyboarding world. Shot mostly along Ali'i drive, this high energy film is jam packed with Hawaii's favorite bodyboarders.
Pipeline Posse: Directed by Kona boy and North Shore resident Ariel Willeford. This is an inside look at one of Hawaii's most influential surf crews, the Pipeline Posse. The Pipeline Posse is made up of Braden Dias, Jaime Sterling, Flynn Novak and Jason Frederico, a group of world-class watermen who know and respect the wave and share that feeling with qualified and deserving others in the line up and on the beach.
Down the Barrel: This ESPN original documentary follows Kelly Slater, Kalani Robb, Joel Parkinson, and Rob Machado to explain surfing to the layman. This films' incredible visuals earned it the 'Best Cinematography' award at the 2007 Surfer Poll
Riding the Wave: One way to understand the current state of the surfing business world is through this movie by filmmaker Chris Cutri. The film is well researched and displays the dynamic between the soul of what surfing culture means for many and its mainstream reality today.
Vaya Con Dios: 2 surfers, one beat-up truck, and the Pan-American Highway. This film follows Scott and Zach from Alaska to the southern tip of Chile and introduces the viewer to the people and places they encounter along the way. (this film contains some explicit language)
Quintal De Casa: Filmmaker Rafael Mellin documents a few of Brazil's best surfers in this action documentary. An insightful and beautifully shot movie that takes the viewer on a journey through the exotic country South American country, it was awarded 'Best Overall Film' at the Festival du Surfe in Hossegor, France.
Heart of a Soul Surfer: The documentary of shark attack survivor Bethany Hamilton. An inspiring look at a young lady who turned tragedy into a vehicle for her faith in God. Awarded 'Best Documentary' at the Hawaii International Film Festival. (Contains strong religious overtones)
Trilogy: Andy Irons, Taj Burrow, and Joel Parkinson all brought to the screen by legendary filmmaker Taylor Steele. These guys represent the best and brightest in surfing today.
One California Day: A story about surf culture and tradition. One California Day is a visual journey through six distinct coastal regions, capturing the California surfing experience through the surfers who live it.
