The Progression

About Me

The roots of The Progression can be traced through the foothills of South Carolina, to the Irons Family garage in Spartanburg. The original band of Ben Irons, Daniel Irons, Anthony Charles, and Ryan Scott began cultivating their musical talents together in 1995. From the garage to junior high and high school parties, the band became a local favorite and managed to create a following in and around the Spartanburg area. In college the band was billed under many different names and played various parties, tailgates, charity events, and bars in Columbia while attending the University of South Carolina.
The foursome began to mature musically and decided it was time to put a permanent name to the face of the band. They decided on "The Progression" which was a perfect connotation of the musical focus of the group. Since naming the band, they have focused their efforts on bringing authentic progressive roots music to the fans who crave it most. After 13 years their music has become their centerpiece and they are looking forward to making more of it for many years to come.

Influences: The Progression attempts to incorporate the music of and pay tribute to their many influences. However, most of the band's influences are inimitable. The band has been described as an improvisational funk and soul outfit that occasionally dips into both the expected and unexpected realms of other genres as well. Some of the artists that provide influence and inspiration are: The Allman Brothers, Frank Zappa, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Band, Otis Redding, Donny Hathaway, The Derek Trucks Band, Curtis Mayfield, Jellyfish, Ray Charles, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Phish, Jimmy Smith, Bob James, Bob Marley, Marshall Tucker Band, Dr. Dre, Sam Cooke, Jamiroquai, The Grateful Dead, Brian Blade, Pat Metheny, Little Feat, Bill Withers, Robert Johnson, Parliament, Sly and the Family Stone, The Beatles, Earth Wind and Fire, Charlie Parker, Taj Mahal, Coltrane and many others.
