Well, May Day's story is quite the usual one.
Basically, it all started back in 1995, when a 14 years old girl, crazy about music, after 2 years in a music school learning the saxophone where she got bored to death, decided to quit (her parents got mad) and spent all her money (which was not a lot) on an acoustic guitar, and a theoric book to learn how to play it (her parents got chronic headaches for years).
Then, at the age of 18, there was the 'Jellyfishes' experiment, a pop-rock band she founded with B., who she met at the music shop she used to shop at and 3 male friends of his, in which she was the lead singer and songwriter. The Jellyfishes didnt last for long, but as they were rehearsing every sunday morning for 6 months and even finally set up a gig, that seemed pretty serious. (her parents probably thought that was only a logical phase for a teenage girl to go through). Oh, and also she got a wonderful folk guitar on her 18th birthday. (which involved a major change of sound).
From then, May Day found herself all alone again and just tried to learn more and more by practicing on her own, only playing for fun, the secret aim of it being to write one day a song she'd be actually absolutely proud of. (yes, she got despaired from time to time)
And, one day, on a late night of October '04 (her neighbours hate her), she came along with "Bring it on". Something happened from here. Maybe just a gain of self confidence, because for the first time in years, since the Jellyfishes' split up, she actually had people listening to her stuff and got real encouraging feedback.
So now, it's 2007, May Day's 26 and still writing songs from time to time and (badly) home recording them late at night (her neighbours want her dead) with an MD, usually in a single take and preps to have them recorded better to see how it can sound, for REAL. And that's still for fun, only now, the whole world can hear them (and maybe write to her neighbours to tell them she's not such a bad girl)
