About
At the core of melancholy there's always hope. Apple of Discord capture that subtle push and pull of sweetness and sorrow on their newest release, You're Not The Answer. A contemplative and earnest collection of songs that explore the truths of human interaction and the realities of growing up, the band's fourth CD is out now courtesy of Azteca Records and Engineer Records.
With James Cuartero on vocals and guitar, Nolan Ciron on bass, Michael Mamaril on guitar and Brian Newell on drums, the band couples indie rock guitars with artful dynamic shifts and heartfelt vocals. Lyrically, Cuartero mines the stories and experiences of the people in his life.
"A lot of people mistake the songs as being autobiographical," he says. "But I don't write songs about myself anymore. Most of them are for people I know, and about situations and emotions that I never talk to them about." Then he adds, "I am fully aware of how creepy that is."
But it's a perspective that works and one that has provided plenty of inspiration since Apple of Discord first formed in 1996. The group has thrived as active members of southern New Jersey's dynamic DIY scene, often setting up their own more intimate shows in addition to regular club gigs.
Press
"After one listen of You’re Not the Answer it's obvious that this mature group have masterfully honed their chops writing some of the most ear-grabbing, dawdling rock your ears will comfortably snuggle up with. Definitely cool stuff." Fake Train
"As a co-release between Azteca and Engineer Records, You’re Not the Answer will get plenty of press, and I guarantee it will (or at least should) be all positive. How can you go wrong with great melancholic emotional indie rock? Witness as young kids grow into mature adults still desperately clinging on to their past lifestyles. Gifted guitars plod on, forging a pathway for you to follow in their wake. This is the real emotional indie rock, pay attention please." Smother Magazine
"Apple of Discord combine the best of both worlds to make an obsessively catchy album mixed with the creativity derived from a full-fledged indie powerhouse... It's not obscenely filled with the sounds of an offbeat kid crying into a microphone nor is it as random as a 40 year old with a handle-bar moustache telling folk tales while strumming a first act guitar. It's just a mild amalgamation of a down to earth rock band combining catchy with cozy like it's nobody's business." Skyline Press
"This music is practically essential in maintaining some sort of integrity and balance in a time when far too many bands (often unknowingly) place fashion over function. If you don't believe me, you're just not looking." Punkrocks.net
"Apple of Discord conveys heartache and pain well, without becoming tedious or painful to listen to. It may be sad stuff, but it's listenable sad stuff -- a distinction, frankly, that we wish more bands would understand." Splendid
"It's all in the songwriting, friends. It's got character, and it can fill your void in the proper situation. The Cure is sad and melancholy, but did that ever steer anyone away? Nah, just eat it up for the metal you are to the magnet that pulls you." Delusions of Adequacy
