About Me

MyGen Profile Generator
This is a solo project, and it is the first metal project I have done. I really come at this project from more of a folk/acoustic background... I always played acoustic instruments (other than playing a little electic bass in bands as favors to friends) and felt no need to pick up an electric guitar. But times and modes of expression change, and I began to find that the acoustic songs I was writing and playing were not effectively expressing what I was feeling. Thus, I bought an electric guitar, and Ulthar was born. This is all very new to me. I have a long way to go with my guitar playing... I'm aware of that more than anyone, but I think I'm doing okay for the short time I've been playing. I already know how to write songs, I suppose, but this type of songwriting is very different from what I'm used to. I suppose it's good that I bring something different to the table. My songs are largely emotional in nature; Ulthar is very cathartic for me. One of my goals with the project is that the songs tell a story and follow a theme, whether that finds its expression in more traditional storytelling as in the song "Truth," or in a more emotional outpouring, as in "Beyond the Veil of Death." I record and mix my own music on my PC... it has taken me a couple years to learn to do everything, but it has been well worth the effort. The band name "Ulthar" comes from one of my favorite H.P. Lovecraft stories... actually, Ulthar is mentioned in a lot of his stories. I do draw on a lot of Lovecraftian imagery in my lyrics, but there are many other influences as well. I majored in literature at university and studied poetry extensively, and I think some of that shows up in my lyrics. These are unreleased tracks I recorded in 2006. They are all really raw demo versions of songs that may go on a record someday in some form or another, basically me learning to play, sing, write and program. My husband programmed the drums on "Truth" on a drum machine which is why it sounds different from the other songs, which were done by me in Reason. I took a break from playing music in 2007 due to a bunch of bullshit that was going on with me. I don't know if I will continue this project or start a new one, that remains to be seen.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Asenaath~~ Guitar, Bass, Violin/Fiddle, Keyboard, Vocals, Drum Programming, Bodhrun, Electronics, Various Other Noises

Influences: My musical influences are really diverse... anything from black metal to thrash to doom to classical to traditional irish & bluegrass music to Johnny Cash. I think there's good music and bad music, and both can be found in just about any genre. Some weeks, I'll listen to nothing but black metal; other weeks, The Pogues stays in my CD player for days on end. Some days, I just want to listen to Enya. I've only been listening to metal for about 8 years, and only been really seriously applying myself to learning about it for about 4, so I have SO much to learn!!
Sounds Like: The Myspace drop-down menu is somewhat limiting so I did the best I could with what I had. I am new to playing this music and am doing so out of a need to express myself artistically and emotionally. I have a long way to go before I'm where I want to be, but I think it's slowly getting better.

The Cats of Ulthar

This H.P. Lovecraft story is the inspiration for the name of my project; I am posting it for my friend and bridesmaid Chaela who has never read it before, and for anyone else who might be curious...
