"The Cocktail Party"
I see the faces of the people who surround me--
vampire smiles--everyone of them
their fangs drip blood as they greet
each other,
laughing--they toast each others' fortunes
in silver goblets that cast no reflection
I sit alone, warily--wondering if I'll live
through the night
hiding the waves of terror that creep up my spine
Am I the only one who can see,
the thin bony hands with dagger-edged nails?
Am I the only one who feels
like a young suckling pig, roasting on an iron spit?
How can the scarlet stains
go unnoticed--on the white shag rug
or pink silk couch?
Perhaps,
If I remain silent and still,
with a small, innocent smile permanently,
affixed to my face, concealing my revulsion
and my urge to flight, hoping this is just
another bad dream,
I'll be passed over--again.
