HERE IS HIS STORY THANK YOU HOPE YOU ENJOY AND SUPPRT ALL FALLEN HEROS !!!!!Ernesto Serna Patrolman Born: February 25, 1960 End of Watch: November 12, 1991On Tuesday night, November 12th, 1991, Officer Ernesto Serna from the Central Substation, was working an extra-duty assignment as security at the Wal-Mart Store at 1100 N. Yarborough. Officer Serna saw Jessie Romero take a coat from the rack and walk out of the store without paying for it. Officer Serna followed the shoplifter out of the store and stopped him in the parking lot. When Officer Serna confronted Romero, he took a handgun out from under his coat and fired at Officer Serna, striking him once in the face. The wounded officer returned fire and shot Romero three times, killing him. Officer Serna was rushed to Thomason Hospital where he died shortly after 9:00 p.m. Officer Serna had just returned from Saudi Arabia where he served as a reservist in Operation Desert Storm. Officer Serna was survived by his wife and children. His oldest son, Eloy, recently joined the El Paso Police Department and continues the family tradition in law enforcement. THE FACTS: Nearly every other day or every 54 Hours a law enforcement officer is killed somewhere in America. It is because of this extraordinary level of service and sacrifice that a National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial was dedicated in 1991 in Washington, D.C. It is also why a National Law Enforcement Museum is scheduled to open across the street from that Memorial in 2009. While significant, these honors may seem very distant to families still grappling with grief over the loss of their loved ones. This is especially true in communities where the general public has ambivalent feelings, or worse, toward law enforcement. According to a U.S. Department of Justice study, only one out of every five Americans has any direct contact with a law enforcement officer during the course of a year, and most of those contacts are traffic stops. It is easy to understand why public support for law enforcement is sometimes lacking ... HOW YOU CAN HELP: Please remember the 142*+ Law Enforcement Officers that Died in the Line of Duty in 2006. Do not forget the thousands who have fallen before them.....Rest now my brothers and sisters.....We have the watch..... Please Protect your Peace Officers, They Protect YOU! Please Don't Drink & Drive!
