I am here for Friends

About Me

My life in a nutshell:Born in Berkeley, but raised in Southern California, mostly in Orange County. Spent my last two years of high school in Springfield Virginia where I discovered sex, drugs and rock and roll. Moved back to Orange County, but shortly escaped with my sanity close to intact and moved to the greater Los Angeles area (San Fernando Valley) where I've been ever since, not for a lack of trying to get out.Started working in record stores at age 18 and quickly decided that the Hippie life was not for me. Off went the hair and on went ill-fitting suits and ties, so when punk started up a few years later, I was well prepared for it.Got loosely involved in the LA punk scene under the name "Jet", which was actually given to me several years earlier as a nickname. Started managing a band called The Furys, who weren't really punk but were damned good. Also tried to work with the Zeros, but they moved to San Francisco. And then spent a year managing Pasadena art punks, BPeople, but it didn't work out and I gave up on manangement for the time being.Met my boyfriend, Skip in 1979 at a record store I worked at. We became an item a year later and went to London to honeymoon. Twenty-Six years later, we're still together and happy about it. (We went to Portland Oregon to get married in 2004 and that lasted a year before the homophobes got it annulled. They should have a marriage that lasts as long as mine has!)Met Lydia Lunch and flirted around with performance art. Worked a bit with Jim Thirwell and Henry Rollins and appeared in the R. Kern film "Fingered" (as Jet) before deciding that I wasn't really suited for that kind of stage.Tried my hand in bands, starting an experimental group called Jes Grew, as well as working with one-off bands Sprout Mountain and Some Black Woman (with members of Three O'clock, Pandoras, White Flag and more).Tried to move to New York, but was sucked back to LA a few months later and started working for Three O'clock, Redd Kross and Choir Invisible as a tour manager. Met Thin White Rope from there and started touring with them. They got invited to Europe and I took on business management duties as well. Worked with them for years and toured the USA and Europe a number of times, including the first ever independent band tour of the Soviet Union. Met Poster Children and started working with them as manager as well, but didn't tour with them. Also managed a short European tour with The Young Fresh Fellows and the Dharma Bums. TWR broke up and I continued on with Poster Children, as well as short stints with the Walkabouts, Seam, Congo Norvell (with Kid Congo Powers), Chance The Gardener (who burnt out in flames) and Belgian group Nemo, but I never got over the loss of TWR, who I loved dearly, and the fact that it was a struggle to get anything done with the Poster Children, who I also loved dearly, due to major label apathy. So I did a short USA tour with Australian band Underground Lovers and a Spanish tour with TWR offshoot, Graves Brothers Deluxe, and fled that aspect of the business altogether. And good riddance to it.Went to work for the Rhino Records Westwood store and eventually became the head buyer. Loved the job, but hated the circumstances and left after several years. I never want a boss again and now I spend my time raising money by selling collectables on the internet. And that's the Cliff's Notes...(By the way, I'll be changing sights and sounds around here at least once a month. I want to highlight some of the great bands I'm discovering here as well as some of the interesting people and objects that haunt this place. The top four of my favorite Friends will always stay the same, but the other spaces will change at my will. Visit those I highlight. You won't be dissappointed.)

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Anyone interesting from anywhere interesting. I'm especially interested in people from other places and cultures. I have traveled to England, Scotland, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, San Marino, Italy, Greece, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Luxemburg, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, Russia, Georgia (Tbilisi), South Africa, Argentina and Uruguay. A trip to Asia, probably Thailand, is in the planning stages. I've also been to almost every state in the Union. (Still missing a few unfortunately.) Traveling is the most important thing in the world to me. I don't think anyone can truly understand the world if they haven't been immersed in various other cultures.
