Numismata is a Sao Paulo based brazilian indie-samba band. After releasing their first demo, Módulo Experimental Zero, recorded and released their acclaimed 2003 first album, Brazilians on the Moon, in which they display their unique blend of rock, psychedelia, samba, with distorted guitars, tamborins and delays.
Keen to their roots as well as music enthusiasts and conisseurs, this CD is really one of a kind, as anything with an ounce of soul should be. Mixing incongruous influences as such as Wilco, Jards Macalé, Flaming Lips, Thomas Truax, Rufus Wainwright, Chico Buarque, Secos e Molhados and many others, they suceed in overcoming all comparision and creating their own distinctive sound. As being brazilians, they add samba to it, as an american would dirge into folk.
Their critic acclaimed lyrics dwell in life, death, age and loss and have been rated as excelent, with further comparisons to the likes of Leonard Cohen or a well-mannered Nick Cave.
Now the band is finishing their long-awaited second album, called Chorume, widening the range of their sonic pallete as they throw vaudeville, samba, krautrock, psychedelia, indie-rock, pop, dixieland and mambo into the mix. Zeitgeist is a highlight, with its lyrical references to the perceived genius in craziness. Which other band puts Syd Barrett, Erasmo de Rotterdam and Virgina Woolf in a Squirrel Nut Zippers styled song?
