Music has been Dean's passion ever since he was a DJ at his 20-watt high school radio station back in the late 1970s. Since then, he has worked as an on-air personality and music programmer for numerous formats in the Pacific Northwest, helping discover and champion multiple new artists.
His early radio days at top40 KJRB, Spokane, were filled with the new wave pop sounds of the 1980s. At album rock KISW, Seattle, he was part of a radio station that dominated the city in both ratings and spandex. As Music Director at KXRX, Seattle, he contributed to what is still referred to as the Seattle Sound and helped make grunge a mainstream phenomenon.
Having released all of his angst in the early nineties, Dean shifted formats and started as Music Director at adult rock KMTT (The Mountain), Seattle, one of the first stations in the country to embrace the AAA format. His 6 years at KMTT brought him national attention (including multiple music director of the year awards) after breaking many new artists like Dave Matthews, Sheryl Crow, and Ben Harper.
Deans musical journey continued when he left terrestrial radio for the crazy life at an Internet startup. As a new media Music Director at The Dial and LoudEye Radio, he was responsible for programming and producing over 10 music formats including alternative, hard rock, top40, blues and electronic.
Dean continues to DJ at clubs in the Seattle area and runs a tab at local record stores as he searches for the best new music from around the globe.

The Vieux Farka Touré / "Ana" Remix Contest
Creative Commons, Modiba Productions and Global Beat Fusion are pleased to present the Vieux Farka Touré / "Ana" Remix Contest. Vieux Farka Touré — a highly talented guitarist, singer, songwriter, and percussionist from Mali — is offering the audio source files from the song “Ana†online under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial license, so that producers worldwide can use the sounds in remixes and new compositions.
How to Participate
Entry Period: The Contest's audio elements will go online at 9:00 a.m. PT on January 24, 2007. You may enter the Contest by uploading your remixes to http://ccmixter.org from 12:00 a.m. PT on February 7, 2007 until 9:00 p.m. PT on March 7, 2007.

Entries will be judged based on the following criteria
* Creativity (70% of overall score)
* Production quality (30% of overall score)
Prize
After all eligible entries have been received, Eric Herman and Jesse Brenner of Modiba Productions and Derek Beres of Global Beat Fusion will be selecting the best remix. The winning remix will be included on Modiba Productions’ “Vieux Remixed†CD compilation.

A "short" of the documentary film being created around our friend Derek Beres' book, Global Beat Fusion. This eight-minute short contains interviews with Bill Laswell, Andres Levin (Yerba Buena) and Vishal Vaid (Karsh Kale's Realize Live). The movie is scheduled to be released in early '07.
