About Me

These days, it’s hard to come by a dj. whose skills speaks for itself. For Miami's own Dj.Phill, there are no gimmicks or sideshow props in his hustle; his style, much like his name, stands out on its own... “The difference with me is that you can press play when you listen to a lot of Dj's, but you’ll get a different bounce with me.” Growing up in the infamous Liberty City neighborhood of Miami,Dj.Phill (born Phillip Ian Jones) came up like many teens raised in a broken home—he never knew which step would lead him in the right direction. With absentee parents, the Southern DJ. relied on the support of his grandmother. But holding the reigns on a precocious, yet troublesome 17-year-old was a job in itself, and Phill found himself leaving the musical vibes in exchange for the love of money and drug sales. After serving a 3yr. sentence in F.D.O.C. he realize that he was a great hustler but the game was not for him, it was an answer to Phill's ambitions. After being released from behind the prison walls, Djing again became his study. Once in Miami, Phill put his style to the test alongside Dj.Smoke One, mixing records in and out and created his owe style of talking in the next record "on cue as the other record was still playing". But once again, trouble landed right at Phill's doorstep. “I had to leave everything that I had ,” he states. “I came back to Miami tho but, again with nothing.” Phill's return to his hometown became a blessing in disguise in 2005. The Dj.returned with a street movement with THE STREETS IS MINE vol.1—his first mixtape. After pressing up 1,000 copies, he began selling, and giving, his debut mix to anyone who would give his choice of the hottest artist from his hometown a listen. From flea markets to clubs, there was no stopping Phill's hustle. “I always got good feedback, never negative,” says Phill. “So that made me want to pass [my mixtapes] out to anybody, I didn’t care if you were a DJ or a schoolteacher or a farmer. It didn’t matter. You needed to have my CD.” His grind was duly noted which earned the Dj.phone calls from night clubs in Florida. Phill's standout style and unique vibe caught Bo-Diesle's ears, as well as interest Jr. of The Streets FM, but the duo needed to see what the DJ. had to offer on the outside first. “In Miami, people have 8,000 gold teeth and a head full of dreads for no reason. DJ.Primetime's words were if I didn’t look like a monster, then he knew it was a done deal.” And so began the life and times of Dj.Phill Gates!!!
