“That will always be my music, man. I play ‘Kind of Blue’ every day – it’s my orange juice. It still sounds like it was made yesterday.â€--Quincy JonesJig Dagod - Jarvis, also known as Jig, was born in the waters of the Pacific Ocean, Agana Heights, Guam, early 1982. Since the early days of growing up listening to soul music, Jig knew he would be apart of music in some way. He dabbled in learning to play the Trumpet, but with no trainer to encourage him to keep going, he let it go. Then a few years after that he felt that playing the keys was his niche. He had a few lessons but it wasn’t enough to keep him going after the black and white. Jig always kept a keyboard, but never learned to play. That never stopped him from having a passion for music. He still remember the days he would steal his older brother’s tapes and make a copy for himself and just listen to it until he couldn’t listen anymore. That’s when he first acquired a taste for hip hop music. From that day forth, soul and hip hop music has always kept Jig in a calm state of mind. Nothing soothes his soul like hearing good music. High School soon hit and that’s when Jig met some friends and he soon found out that they made beats. That was his first introduction to beatmaking. They used a program called DDClip. They sampled their sounds from different cd’s and took individual hits from other artist and created good music. Jig was always curious of how they did it so he sat down in the producer chair and started laying his hi-hats; snare and kick drum individually to create a loop. Then he loaded up a sample and it was a hit to him, but it still was in the need of help. After reminiscing on the days he was cleaning up the house listening to the Commodores, Earth Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye, Pattie LaBelle, etc. Then the time came when he first tried to make a beat, he felt that he could go far with his creative mind and some nice sounds so he decided to start producing.Jig was greatly influenced by many of today’s producers; like DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Erick Sermon, Kanye West, Shawn J, Hi-Tek, Dr. Dre, etc. He first began producing with Fruity Loops 4 and various .mp3 files. He figured he had to start some where before he could say that he wanted to continue it. He knew composing wasn’t his thing so he had to follow in the footprints of his influencers. To chop and flip an ill sample is the key to Jig’s production. The first time he tried to flip a sample, it didn’t come out correct so he stepped away from it but he never gave up. His goal was to make a beat that would make his head nod and say that’s what I want to keep making. He finally reached that goal after months of practicing. Although he can compose some, his mainstay is sampling. Nothing makes Jig feel better than hearing the past in his music and having an understanding that this is what he was born to do. After letting other’s sample his creations some will go on to say that Jig is no stranger to making music that makes you feel good about yourself.Jig’s goals with his music is to the point; to create feel good music that compliments his style and that will touch others and make them say, Jig will be amongst the greats.
