Welcome to Nashville's only independent radio station, 91.1 WRVU FM. Check out our website for show schedules, staff info, and upcoming events. ..
WRVU was founded in the 1950s as an educational lab for Vanderbilt students interested in communications and broadcasting and now functions as a community service of the university. We broadcast to the Greater Nashville/ Middle Tennessee area with 10,000 watts of power. We also broadcast over the internet live. Our format is pretty eclectic, ranging from indie rock to the latest in hip hop, to award-winning soul, funk, 70s rock, electronica, gospel, blues and bluegrass shows.
The station began as WVU and was broadcast from the basement of Tolman Hall, one of the dormitories on Alumni Lawn. It was a small affair operating only on a carrier wave. As the years went by, the station's signal was increased to 5 watts (enough to be heard all over campus!) to a few hundred watts in the early '70s to our current rating of 10,000 watts, giving us an effective broadcast radius of at least 30 miles.
WRVU is a non-profit radio station and reports to CMJ. It is a subsidiary of Vanderbilt Student Communications and its e-staff is comprised solely of Vanderbilt undergraduate students. DJs include Vanderbilt undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff, and members of the Nashville community.
