SOMETIMES PEOPLE CALL ME
Oh Mickey what a pity, you don’t understand.
I EARN A CRUST BY
Immersing myself in virtual advertising and connecting the industry through moving simulacra. Baudrillard, you’d be proud.
JUST BEFORE I ANSWERED THESE I WAS
Checking my tyres for kindergarten chalk marks that law enforcers draw in their spare time.
MY WORST HABIT IS
Taking too much protein powder in the hope of becoming a unit.
WHO I'D LIKE TO BE IF NOT ME
Mickey Mouse, my protégé
PEOPLE TELL ME I'M
Speeding in the wrong lane at the wrong time – it's a prerequisite for getting to work on time.
MY WARDROBE FAVOURITE IS
My Armani Bomber Jacket.
IF I COULD BANISH ONE TREND IT WOULD BE
Tetris coloured squares, printed on couture.
MELBOURNE IS THE NATION'S FASHION CAPITAL BECAUSE
After looking at their architectural disaster nearamnew, at least Melbourne’s fashion federates all.
MY BIGGEST SPLURGE WAS
At The Strand Arcade, where I swiped my credit card more times then a child on Kool Aid. I bought every V-Neck coloured sweater from designer, Catherine Maplebrown.
MONEY CAN'T BUY HAPPINESS BUT
When I drive a convertible, hmmm no valium necessary for this uptake.
I'VE NEVER TOLD ANYONE THIS BUT
I really like coloured V-necks.
WHEN DOWN TO MY LAST $1000 - TOM FORD OR TARGET?
Messiah Ford can turn my rags into riches with a mere grand. Target couldn’t perform such miracles and if they did, they ought to be chastised.
IF I WERE A FASHION ITEM I'D BE A

WHAT THIS INDUSTRY NEEDS IS
More Sean Ashby’s, using charm, wit and the power of being a bum. About time we marvelled at the sight of such modern ingenuity.
I know I made you Cream, but it's not the only way to get on top... I get to interview the Bang Gang Dj's.
03_ OFF CHOPS AND ALL OVER SHOP: The Bang Gang boys
THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS SPECIALISATION IN THE BANG GANG DJs BOOK OF TURNTABLISM. IN FACT, IF MUSIC EVER HAD SOME SORT OF DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM OF ORDER, THESE GUYS WOULD RIP UP THE CATALOGUE. GUS DA HOODRAT AND JAMIE DOOM SPEAK WITH MICHAEL CHRISTOFIS ABOUT MUSIC MASHING AND TRASHY CLUBBING.
Back when psychedelic rock was born, The Beatles’ ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ caused a lot of controversy. While beady-eyed uni-lecturer types insisted the title was code for LSD, a popular hallucinogenic drug of the time, the kids were off their heads on all manner of illicit substances, only to enhance the already trippy listening experience. Alas, listen to the lyrics to ‘Lucy in the Sky’ and you can only assume John Lennon was on hard acid when he wrote it.
Now, picture yourself hanging four decades down the line at some block party in Surry Hills. The stench of amyl nitrate and crystal is in the air. Conversations between dealers and poppers are going on around you. Laser lights are doing their magic, bouncing off shiny disco balls to the beats of a brilliant set by the Bang Gang DJs. It’s psychedelic rock, a bit like that in Lennon’s hey-day. But bigger, better, faster. All mashed to oblivion.
Why the Lennon the connection in this Bang Gang boys’ profile? Because the boys’ new album is called ‘Light Sound Dance’, and we’re not going to pretend to you, dear reader, that these cheeky lads aren’t flirting with the all-the-kids-off-their-heads connotations.
“In the beginning, we were just doing what we were doing,†tells Bang Ganger Gus Da Hoodrat, “just being kind of stupid and ironic… and you can get away with that overall sense of humour at small gigs. Then we took that into a bigger nightclub [scene] and still people didn’t go, ‘What the fuck is this?’ so it’s been great.â€
What’s also great are the invitations Gus and company have been receiving to play overseas clubs and events, which they’ll enjoy doing over the next few months, carting their record crates from Tokyo to London to Barcelona and then back home for the festival season. No doubt about it, ‘Light Sound Dance’ is all the CV these guys need to impress international punters.
The album is a double-disc set that, right from the get-go, fuses a handful of disparate genres: a blue-grass riff blended in with Wolfmother’s rocky ‘Woman’, melting into Spiller’s heavy-electric ‘Music By Night’ and a little calypso, followed by bits of Shitdisco, Soft Tigers, Bumblebeez and (daddies of the mash movement) Soul Wax. Now that’s just in the first six minutes.
“The funny thing is,†continues Gus, “when we first started, we were never really DJs as such. Well, none of us apart from Adrian [aka: Ajax].
“Jamie [Doom] started with us a year into the party. He was more of the party-boy/drug-dealer. He converted Ajax from the fun-loving, pimp-talking party-boy that he was into, like, a monster party animal and drug-taker.â€
He said it. Not us. The fact is, dance music and drug culture do go hand-in-hand, and it’s like the Bang Gang boys don’t want to patronise their audiences, even when they’re cracking the occasional drug joke.
“It was like a drug revolution amongst the straight people that would come,†tells Gus of the crew’s first gigs in Kings Cross. “These gay people would also come, and they'd start injecting gay drugs into all these straight people. Everyone was either gay, or they were bi, and then all of a sudden they were straight, and I didn’t know what the hell was going on. I’d tell my mum that the kids love us. They’d come to our shows and just love to get trashed.â€
It seems the boys’ fondness for party ammunition goes way back. Gus recalls the days he used to work with Dan Single in a clothing store - Dan, of course, now a key member of both Bang Gang and clothing label Ksubi: “We had free beer in the shop. If you bought clothes, you'd get free beer. Jamie would come in. He wouldn't buy clothes, but he'd drink all the beer.â€
There he goes again, pointing the glow-stick at Jamie. One does have to wonder, with the six of them sharing the spinning, scratching, looping and whatnot behind the decks, does it ever get chaotic to the point of trouble?
“It's like organised confusion,†tells Gus. “When all of us play together, there's always someone that takes it too far; someone who gets wasted. But then there’s also someone who can play like shit; who can play really well, so ultimately we do hold it together.â€
For those not wanting to remain so responsible at their next house party (let’s just say you’re too busy serving goodies to your guests), you can simply stick on the new Bang Gang double-longplay and rest assured there’s something on here for everyone to enjoy.
“We really wanted to make something that was fun,†pips up an up-until-now rather coy Jamie. “Music you could imagine hearing us playing at a club; but also something you could listen to while driving around.â€
Because of some of its more ‘mellow’ lyrical content, as opposed to the hardcore instrumental electronica heard on many a DJ comp today, Jamie adds that “it’s not an album many people would go home, turn their lights off, and start popping pingas to.â€
Well, maybe not on their own.

Bang Gang’s ‘Light Sound Dance’ is out through Modular Records.
Dear gentleman and sassy, 6-and-a-half-inch heel wearing ladies, my name is Mickey. I love meeting individuals who are confident, extremely out going and attribute to my fun filled journey called life. I'm currently an Online media manager for a uber cool fashion site. I love designers, parties, fast cars and sexy dinners.
I would also say I live a life of pure unadulterated pandamonium. The majority of my life - is lived in a fast lane with God slowing me down for my preservation. I also have a secret crush for Melbourne. My friends down in minus 5 degree chills are absolutely priceless.
I graduated from Macquarie University in the year of 2006 in Media and Communications. A big shout out to all funky academics at Macquarie who believed in a shining star called Mickey. You'd be so proud of my sexy career!
I'll always be indebted to my publisher. Thankyou for your unparalelled wisdom, knowledge and tough goingness. I also thankyou for allowing me to push the envelope, get in hot water at times for doing things so passionately but above all allowing me to marvel the media with my amazing talents and abilties. Redudancy in journalism is certainly frowned upon which is why I want to evolve with ingenuity and fierce talent.
To my ex-deputy editor from Cream Magazine. Terry you will always be a rock of comfort. Thanks for your purity and always reminding me that Jesus loves me.
The most admirable quality which i try to stay true to is being responsible for the happiness which you can create in others. It's exciting to get them off on it. It's all about the love, good times and good vibes. Being successful in a career which fosters all forms of popular culture is what I aspire to.
I am proud to have been apart of the KINK party days at the arthouse hotel on pitt street each Saturday night... I have ultimate respect for my Director Scott Robinson who offered me an opportunity to work for him and made me the gentleman I am today. Thankyou my dear friend.
