Springtime
"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death."-Martin Luther King Jr.I'm Joel, I write music, build houses and climb/take down trees...I love the Arts and Nature. I believe they communicate to us at heart-level truths that propositional teaching cannot communicate...I love Rock n Roll in all its forms and nuances, leaning slightly to the experimental, progressive, folk and British Invasion sides...I like classical music, too...Really I love and appreciate all music, as is evidenced in my "music" section...I like reading...I really love water and anything to do with it - snorkeling, diving, skiing, fishing, swimming, surfing, sleeping on the beach...I like rock climbing but there are no mountains where I live...I love a good thunderstorm on the Coast, like today... IN OTHER NEWS... I like traveling the Americas. I have lived in Alabama, Ohio, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. I’ve been to 30 states and a few countries, namely Canada, Mexico, Belize, Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad/Tobago and Guyana... My guitar and my hammock go with me almost everywhere. Steinbeck wrote "Travels With Charlie" (his dog) and I think one day I'll write "Los Viajes con Mi Guitarra" (Travels with My Guitarra). That is her name - Guitarra. In English it's just "guitar" but the Spanish name for it is so beautiful and feminine - say it with the soft "g" and roll the "erre's" - and it conjures up a beautiful Spanish girl with dark piercing eyes.I have had a few jobs from high school on: I’ve been a lifeguard, a firefighter, and a youth minister; I've picked cotton (by hand), delivered furniture, worked in a coffee shop, waited tables and now I'm working for my friend Steve's construction company, helping him start it and bring it where it is today. I also do treework with my friend Jessie, which is very high-risk and very fun. My "most funnest" job, however, was a subcontracting job that lasted less than a week last summer, when I got paid $900 plus all expenses to drive 3 tons of steel structure from Birmingham to Las Vegas with my good friend Will. We stayed in Vegas for a day/night and took our time and the scenic route back, through Nevada, Utah, southern Colorado and Kansas.
