I am here for Friends

About Me

I used to think the point of my life was to spread the word of Fowler; now I know it's to debunk the myth that people who work for and use libraries are somehow more intelligent than the spine labels on the books that surround them.
I work in a library, a library that owns several copies of Fowler. Don't be shy: come in and borrow them all.
Apparently, the University of Waterloo doesn't exist, which kind of sucks for myriad reasons. Although, my high school does, which is strange, given that UW has around 20,000 students (I think) whereas my high school had 56. And why does it insist on adding "school" after the name of the school? It's like the Birmingham School of Business School all over again. (See? I can make pop-culture references, too. So there.)
And, just in case anyone is wondering whether Robyn Hitchcock is or is not ten kilos of clever in a ten-pound bag: 'All Rights Reserved All Wrongs Reversed' -- from the small print on the bottom of the Nextdoorland record.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

I am in my own extended network, it seems. Is this extended network phenomenon an equivalence relation?
Um...I have yet to be convinced that non-me people will read this, and I think I might already have met myself; between these two groups, that covers most of the planet. In any case, even if Tommy Douglas has been buried in the pet cemetery, how much do I really want him to come knocking at my door these days?
Also, it seems that I have a mystery friend, since this thing keeps telling me I have more friends than I do. Or perhaps I'm my own friend...but that seems rather presumptuous, you know? I never asked me to be my friend. Why should they assume?

My Blog

Another crappy day

So, someone had a dump last night on the floor in the basement mere metres from the public washroom. Classy. This incident naturally released a historical torrent, wherein I found out--among other th...

Death by Citation Style

Okay, so Girliepants walks up to the desk, and wants help with the citations for the assignment she's working on. She plunks her paper down, and her model citation, and asks me if she's done it correc...

Meet the new neighbours

So, last night, again, the neighbours had their stereo playing sufficiently loudly that I couldn't hear mine over it. And, I'm not the confrontational type, so I just resigned myself to listening to U...

Ack! They're everywhere!

According to the Daily Bulletin, today was 'wear jeans to show you're queer day'.As a lucky accident, I happened to be wearing jeans myself, and noticed a sizable portion of the student population h...

When your version of Greek strikes...

Bored? I have uploaded some recent photos into Picasa. I've got our last day in Lima in there, and I'll be working backwards in time whenever the desire to procrastinate from Greek overcomes me.Warn...

And you want this because...?

So, Dudepants walked up to me today, looking for the solution manual for his textbook. The library doesn't have it. The bookstore doesn't have it. No libraries in the province have it. He wants to buy...

I said narrow

So, in an otherwise more-boring-than-dirt Friday-afternoon shift, I had a visit from Girliepants.Gp: "I want a book on thermodynamics, but not a textbook."Me: "Okay, let's try to narrow that down a li...

Yay!

So, it looks as if I weren't going to be spending the rest of the summer camping out under the stars in Waterloo Park: I have a place, a 2-bedroom townhouse up in the Lakeshore area, a ten-minute bike...
