World hunger is a effect of world poverty. Famine is caused through many inter-related issues causing hunger such as land rights and ownership, agriculture, drought, natural disasters, poor economy, unfair food distribution, and goverment issues. ( Global Issues ). Everyday 29,000 children die from hunger, and hunger related diseases, while as many as 1 in 5 die before their 5th Birthday. While many die from hunger, one sixth of the world's population does not have access to safe drinking water. Almost half the world's population, or three billion people, live on less than two dollars a day while nearly 1.1 billion live on less than a dollar a day. The cost of eliminating the scourge of hunger is a mere $14 billion per year. $17 billion per year is spent on pet food in the USA and Europe. 25% of food bought in Ireland is thrown away.

With East Africa reeling from a succession of failed rains, WFP has warned that a humanitarian catastrophe could engulf the region unless it receives urgent donations to feed an estimated 6.25 million people across Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.
