Sever the Root: Sever the Root is my code name as a solo artist, and someday when I find the right members, I hope to use it for our band name. Until then, I'm just gonna hope that no one steals "Sever the Root" for their own band... I came up with the name as I was taking my dog for a walk, and I noticed that one of our neighbor's lawn had a bunch of weeds in it. So I just muttered you gotta "sever the root", and there you have it...it's just unfortunate that I don't have a band right now.
The songs are all recorded using a simple cakewalk program: I use my keyboard to record the drums, and that's why you won't hear many killer drum riffs at all in my songs. I use a Crate amp for my Fender Powerhouse Strat, a Jackson bass for my Fender bass amp, and a cheap karoake mic that my parents used to use a long time ago. All in all, I wasn't too disappointed with how it ended up, considering the odds. My goal is to improve each demo that I record, whether it be in sound quality or guitar tone.
The lyrical content of my songs range from addressing social, political, and cultural issues that are relevant to my life. A song that is not posted on myspace, but is on my demo called "The Streets" is about the city of Tokyo where I lived for three years after graduating from college. The sheer size and pace of the city gave me a ton of stress, and a few times I felt as if my soul was being sucked away by the streets of Tokyo. I am fascinated with Tokyo, and althought I no longer live there, I continue to study the city from the outside, as well as attempting to visit on a yearly basis.
During my three years in Japan, I found out a lot about myself, and though it was indeed very stressful at times, I am glad that I spent my time there. I was able to reconcile the inner struggles that constantly confronted me during my years in college.
As a "Shin-Issei" (literally means New First Generation, since I was born in Japan but grew up in the States), and as an Asian American, I feel that the Asian American community has a long way to go in order to establish itself in America (at least in the Midwest). Songs such as "No Identity" and "Bottom of the Totempole" explores these issues.
"Identify Yourself" is actually my second demo, but due to the very poor sound quality on my first demo, I didn't release it, er, I mean give it away for free to unsuspecting friends.
