“It’s okay to be different. You don’t have to follow the movement that everybody else is doing just to be a hot artist,” says J Starks.
The 22-year old J Starks describes, as he makes a statement about the music industry in its presence.
You wouldn’t believe this inspiring young artist, until you’ve heard his original but buzz worthy cuts like “Ice Cream, Soda Water”, which contain samples from a Southern childhood rhythmic Double Dutch song, that describes a secret crush or infatuation with an individual. “I thought about all my ex-girlfriends and crushes I had growing up, and decided I would make a song about it. You always hear nowadays; Bitch this…hoe that or she has a fat ass, but you never hear why that female is so phenomenal,” J Starks explains, as if he were reliving the moments with his crushes, as he smiles in remembrance of his past.
This independent titan is ready for his close-up in the music industry, and is dedicated to show the world what roles creativity, punctuality, and a little bit of fun play in his music.
Born in Waco Texas, heavily known for it’s early 90’s tragedy with Branch Davidian leader David Karesh. Joseph Andrew Starks, formerly known as “J Starks,” has seen and been through his share of hardships. Raised in a Christian household, with high values and morals, you would think it’ll be easy for a youngster to be very successful, but with the reality of Waco’s criminal and street credibility, it was much more than an easy feat.
Growing up around drug abuse, illegal sells, robbery, death, family problems, and poor income, J would soon look towards other means beside the streets. At the age of 9, Starks discovered his passion for music and began rapping. Raised in a Christian household, where rap and other indecent forms of music weren’t tolerated, J was forced to keep his artistry in secrecy from his parents. With no musical education or guidance, at the age of 15, Starks converted into an R&B group called "Unique", where he was introduced to harmony and vocal techniques. At the age of 19, J Starks moved to Chicago and began establishing his name as Hip Hop’s future.
In 2005, J Starks continued exercising his passion for music and began recording in Illinois’ StudioChicago, creating the female-craved hit "Ice Cream, Soda Water." After shopping his demo around to labels, management companies, and in major events, J still needed an outlet to reach the masses of the music industry. In July 2006, J Starks was introduced to H24 Records owner, Joey "Hitman" Mitchell by songwriter Jose "Zeah" Gonzalez Jr. After exploiting his music talents to Hitman, the two instantly began working in the studio. In August 2006, J Starks released his first mixtape "Hip-Hop is MySpace", which included the club hits "Do Your Thing" and "5-0" produced by Super Producer Halfman Halfamazin. Receiving great responses on his first mixtape, J Starks is on the road to emerging out as Chicago’s next in-charge.
One the grind, J Starks has performed at numerous amounts of clubs and events, worked with various artists, DJs, producers, and has received radio play from local and international radio stations. His hard work and dedication to the game is evident, as one of Hip Hop’s largest online sites, Str8hiphop.com, recently had J as one of their featured new artists.
J Starks is currently working on a list of new projects, ghostwriting, and will be releasing a brand new mixtape called "Feel That! Mixtape." The mixtape is proclaimed to have a ton of special guest appearances, and is scheduled to be released this Fall.
"I’m unsigned right now but I have a few labels looking at me. BUT IT’S CURTAINS! CURTAINS FOR WHO EVER SIGNS ME!" as J Starks laughs. "I mean, I don’t mean to boast but I’m a hot commodity. I have club joints, consicious music, and plus I bring that original flavor that the listeners enjoy. I’m gold, and who ever strikes it will be living the good life."
