Parker Hoogesteger has only been in Afghanistan since February, but the former Cambrian neighborhood resident recently earned a Purple Heart during a roadside bombing that killed one of his comrades. Hoogesteger, 27, graduated from Leigh High School in 1999. His grandmother, Nancy Hoogesteger, said she received calls from her grandson and a U.S. Army official after the April 29 blast."I'm pretty darn proud of him," she said.Parker Hoogesteger was riding in the turret of a Humvee in a convoy on April 29 near Bagram, Afghanistan. An improvised explosive device detonated, killing Senior Airman Jonathan Yelner of Lafayette, and wounding another soldier in the vehicle. Shrapnel from the explosion punctured Hoogesteger's upper body, left arm and buttocks, but he kept firing his weapon.Days later he was awarded the Purple Heart and other prizes for his actions, and doctors treated him for his injuries. An Army spokesman at Hoogesteger's home base in Fort Campbell, Ky., confirmed that he received the Purple Heart.
