The new millennium has brought forth a 20 year old guitarist that has worked his way to being known as a virtuoso and/or prodigy. With a cool head on his shoulders and quite modest and humble, Deakon LeKross has shocked and amazed countless people not only with his masterful technique as a guitarist, but with his positive attitude. His intricate compositions and incredibly accurate, precise, intuitive leads and passages, serve well to back up his title as a virtuoso.
Meet Deakon LeKross as he tells a little more about himself.
“I first started actually as a singer for a humble little family band, but soon after I started getting very intrigued with how my father and my brother were playing guitar. All the patterns, sounds and phrases that they created caught my fancy and from there, I was hooked into learning how to play this wonderful instrument. I remember the first song my father taught me to play – it was none other than House of the Rising Sun by The Animals. Few years later I started getting into more exotic genres and sounds, and different playing styles. I worked and practiced for 4-7 hours every day to get where I am now, and of course I’m still learning. I will always be a student of music and learn new things every day. I soon started to join into several projects and started to really begin my journey as a musician. I was (and am now) in several different bands, and have always had my own projects going, writing songs for my bands and for myself. It wasn’t long before I had written and was showcased for my talent in a song called Contagious that won me notoriety, respect, and endorsements.”
“I get a lot of questions about my education as a musician, like have I ever had any teachers or mentors, and have I ever been to formal school for music. I will say that I have had several teachers help along my career as a guitarist (I won’t mention names), and they all helped out with what they could and for that I am very grateful for their time, but mostly I learned a big portion of what I know by watching other players endlessly in my room, studying their song structures, their hand styles, their tone, their patterns, and when I started to get to the point where I understood what they were doing I would apply it to my own songs and music and create my own sounds from what I learned. One thing I found to be a very helpful tool in my practices is to listen to EVERYTHING. I have never limited myself to just one style of music that I really like and I am always up for something new. It gives me the freedom to play in any style and any genre when I need it. It gives me variety. I don’t not copy or emulate any other guitarist. I make what I know my own and keep it that way. I don’t want to be the next whoever. I want to be the first Deakon LeKross.”
“In conclusion I am trying to create my own style with all the music involved with this world. I find it funny when people ask me about how good I am… and I always say the same thing, listen and then tell me your answer. Take a chance and get out of your comfort zone and listen to something new. I will always be modest about myself and I will always strive for more, but my common goals are to keep my listeners and viewers in fascination, and to above all, inspire and influence.”
