About Me

Matt Varnum(BIO)-With recordings in, punk, and garage bands, Matt Varnum shifted towards more thoughtful tunes on his first release "Melatonin", which blends warm melodic vocals, a softer take on grunge, touches of twang, and poetic musings on lifes small pleasures and trials. The Spicy electric guitar licks from Lee McCullough (Salomon Grundy) blends smooth rhythmic grooves on "Melatonin", creating a pleasing backdrop, but it is in the warm richness of Varnums voice that stands front and center on the sonic stage. After cutting his teeth in the 80s with King Krab, a band whose "hardpsycherockcore' music was released in Europe, Varnum delved into penning his own tunes with the assistance of Seattle recording engineer legend Conrad Uno (Young Fresh Fellows, Walkabouts) and Jupiter Studio engineer Martin Feveyear (Queens of the Stoneage, Mark lanegan, Modest Mouse, John Wesley Harden). Varnum has worked with other respected artist such as Nate Hill and Sean Hollister of the Putters and King Krab, and the Screaming Trees Mark Pickerel, Van Conner and Gary Lee Conner. Varnum was recently the vocalist for the now defunct Alt/Rock Band "Manuela" out of Ellensburg WA, Varnums hometown. Matt Varnum, recently favors the more rootsy approach on his upcoming release "Freelance Freeloader" taken by some of the musicians he admires such as Nick Drake, Johnny Cash, Iggy Pop, and Tim Hardin. "Freelance Freeloader" was recorded at Orbit Audio Studio in Seattle, WA and was engineered by Joe Reineke of Alien Crime Syndicate. Matt Varnum is sure to appeal to listeners of diverse tastes who prefer authenticity and intensity to pretension and fluff.
