Biography
Henry Soul: “… it was an adventurous two years of my life living back in my native Bangkok between 2005-07 after an absence of some odd 25 years - the greatest part of my life actually. It feels like the story of 'Rip van Winkle': Waking up after 30 years of slumber, I found all streets and buildings had changed and were now teeming with a whole new generation of people vibing on a new and appealing attitude.â€
Inspired, these two years have borne the fruits of Henry Soul’s labour with the completion of his 10-song album which, on his return to Paris, quickly lead to an exciting collaboration with producer and drummer extraordinaire Robin DiMaggio at Los Angeles’s Capitol Studios, culminating in a distinctly original funk soul Master CD.
Henry Soul started out in the rock and pop world. Of Anglo-Thai origins and a budding teen star, Japan beckoned with an offer to release a single. In Tokyo, the discovery of live jazz opened new horizons. A year on, he moved to Hollywood. The Sex Pistol’s last concert in San Francisco inspired and Henry kick started his new band into Hollywood’s post-punk avant-garde rock scene: Whiskey a GoGo, Club Lingerie, TV show 'New Wave Theater', etc….
On concert tour in New York, the city’s artistic vibe of Andy Warhol’s 80ies prodded Henry Soul to settle there, expanding on one hand into the avant-garde scene with performance art shows on Wall Street, the LaMamma Theatre and the Pyramid Club, while on the other hand developing his singing and piano skills on a more intimate local scene in jazz cafés and clubs such as the Café Metropolis and One Fifth.
The early Nineties' World Music brought Henry Soul to Paris, and playing with European, American and African musicians marked a turning point for him: jazz and soul began playing a greater role and his own sound took shape: his voice gained a distinct character lending his original music a touch of soulful groove. Henry Soul played at clubs Les Bouchons, Folies Pigalle, later at Cithéa, Latitude Jazz Club and 'Transmusical de Rennes' festival, featuring guest appearances by musicians as diverse as Edmundo Carneiro, Brazilian percussionist of St Germain & Tania Maria, Cameroonian Raymond Doumbé, one of Myriam Mkeba’s bassist, Australian trumpeter David Lewis, band leader of Paris Combo and/or the American jazz drummer Sangoma Everett.
Recording in London, the new and vibrant DJ and acid jazz scene of the late 90's attracted Henry Soul. Electro-beats and nu-funk were a refreshing influence, introducing a more popular and modern feel. Concerts include the Soho Jazz festival, the Jazz Café and local clubs with guests such as jazz saxophonist Tony Kofi. Another feature became the dance/club scene where Henry Soul performed live in duo with Djs. A set-up successfully continued in Bangkok’s famed Bed Supperclub and Metropolitan Hotel Lounge.
Today, through all major influences, his sense of fun, energy and openness in making music found its way on the new CD. In his own words: “ I think to sum up my musical feelings, there has to be a bit of soul with an affinity to that of American soul singers, some elements of jazz mixed with an electro dance feel to down-right funk. A world citizen, my artistry lies in four continents, my soul in… Music. â€
