Nyugen Smith was born in Jersey City, NJ and spent the early years of his childhood growing up on the island of Trinidad, in the West Indies. From an early age he was exposed to utilitarian forms of art. After moving back to the United States, Smith was introduced to and immersed by association into the visual arts by his mother who sold art by nationally and internationally known artists. Little did he know that the artists that he admired as a child, would one day become admirers and collectors of his work.
Painting was his first love, but Smith has since found sculpture to be a more effective medium for articulating his message.
Smith is now a full time professional artist who lives and works in Jersey City, NJ. His proximity to NewYork City, has afforded him the opportunity to continue to grow as an artist, showing, selling and gaining recognition for his work. Despite his busy schedule, Smith gives back to his community by offering free art classes to children and young adults. He conducts special art programs at public schools, and has been invited to deliver interactive art related presentations.
Smith has also studied at the Studio Arts Centers International in Florence, Italy.
