Stone Document

About Me

Stone Document is a progressive - ambient - fusion trio project manned by drummer/keyboardist, Mike Roze, guitarist, Dennis “Doc” Tirch, and Chapman Stick player, Mark Christensen. Check any preconceptions about "prog rock" or “jam based” music at the attic door, grab some headphones, and give a listen to this blend of electronic pulse, psychedelic improvisations, and a return to music without borders. Stone Document evokes the experimental spirit of early art rock, while delving through the limits of electronic sound. They are sometimes even allowed a sense of humor.Live performances involve elements of free jazz, loop based illbient music, and intense experimental excursions. Drummer, Mike Roze has lent his engineering and studio expertise to the likes of Mercury Rev, King Crimson and Lamb of God. Tirch is a veteran experimental guitarist, who has spent the last several years studying the Guitar Craft approach to music through Tony Geballe, and on retreats with Robert Fripp and other senior “Crafties.’” Mark Christensen’s career has spanned from LA studio work through production and arrangement to Chapman Stick playing with Burlington, Vermont area improvisers. Christensen has also studied Guitar Craft on retreat with Fripp and co.Each Stone Document set is a free improvisational journey which seeks to blend with the energy and attention of the audience and the space. We hope to see you at our next show, and take part in music with you.

Sounds Like: The music consists of improvised sessions and spontaneous compositions that share stylistic elements with Pink Floyd and King Crimson. Beyond these obvious influences, the tracks are awash in layers of sonic exploration involving loops, ambience, and collisions of vast sheets of sound. There is a definite sense of space, and a theme of inner and outer space exploration that is evoked with repeated listening. The CD "Anamnesis" is a good old fashioned "concept record" and represents the soundtrack for an ongoing allegorical space voyage undergone by survivors of a Fifth Planet which collided with our Earth 4.9 billion years ago, giving rise to life on this planet. Nothing like a dose of mystical space exploration to spice up a progressive LP!
