About Me

My husband and I are journalists with a serious dog habit. We've been mushing for more than a decade and have 20+ sled dogs in our kennel. We live on an amazing trail system in Interior Alaska. Rod's dream has been to run the 1,000 mile Yukon Quest, but we've learned the hard way that it's nearly impossible to work full time, raise a kid and successfully run long-distance races. When we're not running dogs, or cleaning up after them, we stay outdoors as much as possible. We are both music junkies; I prefer classic rock, 80s pop and Jimmy Buffett for those cold days on the trail. A little Aerosmith, Neil Young and AC/DC keep Rod moving. Edie loves Leona Lewis and Savage Garden.

Gettin' smoked

We're having flashbacks to 2004, the worst fire season on record in Alaska. We're not up to that level right now, but more than 2 million acres have burned so far this season -- most of it within 75 m...

Evil buzz in the garden

The damn yellowjackets are back. I can't pick the strawberries because there are so many bees buzzing around. They even chased me and Edie off a blueberry patch in the swamp. There are probably nests ...

Falling in love with a handsome, cat-chasing, misbehaving husky

The name Bobby Sox didn't stick. My 5-year-old keeps calling the new dog White Socks, so that's what his name will be. Rod was really hoping for another strong team dog (and dreaming of another leader...

Smoky and Bobby Sox

The first part of the title refers to the air I'm breathing, or more accurately, the air I'm choking on. It's high summer and fire season is in full swing in Alaska. Wildfires are burning to the north...

Karma, dogma and mud in your eye

I'm working on my karma this summer by taking care of a friend's dog team while he's on vacation. Not that I have time -- work is insane and I have deadlines looming on a couple of outside projects, ...

Summer

It's high summer in Fairbanks. The sun sets about 12:30 a.m. and rises just three hours later. The late-night light slanting through the trees is tinted rose by the wildfire smoke in the air and casts...

Starting the countdown to the countdown to winter

It's nearly June, it's light all night and there's not a single mosquito in Two Rivers -- they're all married and raising very large families. ... (groan) Sorry, it's a favorite bumper sticker, but it...

So far away

One of the best things about living in Alaska is that it's so far from the rest of the world. That's also one of the worst things. My family and many close friends are still Outside and I'm too far aw...

Two seasons: mushing and home renovation

We managed to slog through breakup without losing any tools or small children in the mess that was the dogyard. Things have dried out pretty well here, although some of the villages along the Yukon an...

Sticking it to the skeeters

I stopped at Creamer's Field to eat lunch this afternoon and found myself dodging a large, slow, but very persistent mosquito. I guess it's that time of year again. As I was leaving, I found myself be...
